Materials research -plastic bags, straws, and tape

  1. The modern lightweight shopping bag is the invention of Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin.[6] In the early 1960s, Thulin developed a method of forming a simple one-piece bag by folding, welding and die-cutting a flat tube of plastic for the packaging company Celloplast of Norrköping, Sweden. Thulin’s design produced a simple, strong bag with a high load-carrying capacity, and was patented worldwide by Celloplast in 1965.

Straw manufacturing requires several steps. First, the plastic resin and other components are mixed together; the mixture is then extruded in a tube shape; the straw may under go subsequent specialized operations; and finally the straws are packaged for shipment.

The first known straws were made by the Sumerians, and were used for drinking beer, [1] probably to avoid the solid byproducts of fermentation that sink to the bottom.[citation needed] The oldest drinking straw in existence, found in a Sumerian tomb dated 3,000 B.C.E., was a gold tube inlaid with the precious blue stone lapis lazuli.

tape consists of a pressure-sensitive adhesive coated onto a backing material like paper film or cloth.
