Studio Li Young Lee Visualization

“And the fruit rotting on the ground? Time unraveling. And time folded smaller and smaller.”

– Li Young Lee from “One Human Hand”

As I started drawing my first ideas of how I would interpret this Li Young Lee quote, I noticed that I had begun drawing a literal representation of the first part of the quote, “the fruit rotting on the ground.” I had started drawing a tree and filled the space below it with a few rotting apples. As I continued on, I thought about the idea of running out of time to accomplish a personal goal or dream and added a girl looking over the country and onto a small city in the distance, implying that that is where she wants to be. The addition of the floating apples and clocks came when I again thought of the end of the quote, “Time unraveling. And time folded smaller and smaller.” These two sentences are fairly sinister sounding, and the presence of the looming fruit and clocks are there to symbolize this ever-standing presence of said ‘diminishing time.’

I decided to use a combination of pencil and fine marker for this visualization; and kept the colors on the black, white, and grey scale. Using the marker, I outlined the shapes so as to make them stand out more than they would with pencil. It created more contrast and also gives a more cartoon feel to the whole composition. I also thought that the lack of color could make the drawing feel more sinister, as the presence of a constant race for time looms over the girl in the picture.
