This is a collaborative project between Lindsay Walsh and Christopher Kim.
We were inspired by Daniel Sher’s project “Saying Things That Can’t be Said”, which discussed people speaking in non-language based ways over long distances. The original project, can be explored here:

We thought the project was really lovely and poetic, but started to wonder if we could upend this conversation. Instead of hearts and butterflies, how can two people communicate less positive thoughts over long distances? We vent, and stress, and sometimes even harm others without having to be face-to-face.
So for this collaboration, we are thinking of having a pair of voodoo dolls. One for acting upon, one for the effects of that action. So we’re thinking of having a very minimal pair of dolls, or person-shaped stuffed things of some kind.
Or even something as simple (and creepy) as a pair of mannequin heads.
So when you stab it, or poke it, or… something…. the paired object would have some type of reaction. We talked about using nitinol to make it shudder; about being able to raise the arm of the paired piece (but we think that may not be feasible); or even about using disappearing ink (but not red).
