Christopher Breward’s aphorisms from his foreword to Fashion Studies

  1. Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Through its forms, we have an opportunity to re-unite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.

In this aphorism, it is said that science branches such as math and physics go parallel with fashion. It basically means that while creating clothes, there are numbers and calculations in order to make the clothing piece realty. Because fashion starts with an idea and a piece of fabric, to make it wearable there must be put thought into it and calculations so that clothing will fit the body form and make it good looking on the body. I agree with this statement because without uniting art and science fashion and clothing wouldn’t be pleasant to wear or fashionable. So if when these two branches, art and science mixed together it makes fashion fashion today.

  1. Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It’s a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold

Fashion is a wearable piece of art and such as other branches of art, it is created with personal thoughts and effort. And at the end what you create feels like a frigid and special to you. As it gets criticized from other perspectives, the creator gets overprotective with the piece. In fashion, you wear your creation, and that created medium is your reflection of emotions and thoughts. It is basically the reflection of your personality. I believe this is a true generalization because nobody wants to wear something that doesn’t make you feel good. Everybody prefers to look good and even though others don’t appreciate your look, it is your personality transitioned into a wearable art.
