Iterative Pattern Assignment

Now, iterating a few of them:

I ended up expanding upon the cone pattern. I was intrigued by the way they came together and the negative space created.

I was also inspired by Erwin Hauer’s inside and outside patterns:

I combined my two interests and got:

It functions as a wearable “scarf attachment” (term coined by me).

Fashion Accessory from Crumpled Paper

Class: Space & Materiality | Professor: Sunhee Kim

This is what we started with…

We were asked to re-create the gesture of crumpled paper with drawing, however we were only allowed to draw straight lines. Here are my drawings:

And then we had to re-create the gesture with straws and wire. This was a huge challenge as I had never worked with 3D materials before. This is what I came up with:

Lastly we had to create a fashion accessory using a similar method, but it had to have the same beautiful gesture of the crumpled paper.

Here we have my first design:

It was interesting, but not that interesting according to my professor.

 

For that reason, I added a whole bunch of extra lines, and even covered one of the eyes:

This was an improvement, but it was still too regular and not ‘organic’ enough. So I removed many of the excess lines, especially along the exterior, so that it looked more wavy and interesting, just like the gesture of crumpled paper.

I had achieved the gesture now, and the accessory looks interesting, according to my professor, and of course I agreed before moving forward.

Now I could finally start creating, I used a mix of aluminium and brass tubes and held them together with wire:

The small area where the object lacks some sort of paper gesture structure is the area on the very left of the final picture of the completed accessory. That is because that can be moved and sized based on whoever is wearing the accessory.

Evaluation:

Some of my strengths for this project was my level of understanding, I really did well in terms of absorbing the information given to me by my professor and applying it to the project. However I feel like my craftsmanship was somewhat lacking as my joints for the final product looks messy and disorganised; I also feel like my structure is very fragile, compared perhaps to that of my classmates.

This exercise challenged my crafting skills immensely, it was a laborious process that required a lot of energy and attention from me.

The project made me realise that sometimes I have to step back and consider what I could add to enhance or improve the project.

The project also increased my awareness of the importance in planning and process. If I was asked to immediately create the a fashion accessory that creates the gesture of crumpled paper without any of the steps in between, I wouldn’t know where to start.

My tiara/eye-patch mix-up was also very spontaneous, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad Idea. So the project also gave me confidence to create something spontaneously and then improve from there with multiple reiterations in planning (as shown above).

Murder Mystery

Class – Drawing and Imaging | Instructor: Susan Alberto

This is my piece for our Adobe Illustrator segment in drawing and imaging. We were required to use the pen tool in Illustrator along with black boxes in order to create a composition. I diverted slightly from the assignment brief, but I still believe the piece was successful. I was going for a similar look to Frank Miller’s Sin City.
