“Transformed Object” – The Armchair

Project by Nasia Chan.

Description:

The “Transformed Object” bears the concept of my paper mug, having a prism shape and hidden places for storage. There are bookcases in the armrests and under the armchair a footstool is stored.

Object of Inspiration:

Initial idea:

Prism-lipstick-shaped spaghetti holder with salt shaker + indicated spaghetti portions.

The problem I had with this idea is, I didn’t know which kind of recycled material I could use to make it. I wanted to use a material that makes sense to put spaghetti in but also a material that is easy to work with.

I had different ideas for objects either in a prism shape or with hidden areas/functions like the angled bottom of my mug. However, there wasn’t really any idea really liked, which is why I asked my sister for help. She gave me quite a few ideas, out of which I liked the armchair the most. I then further developed the idea into the final product.

Scaled drawing:

Initially, I intended to make this armchair model out of wood and foam. However, because the recycled wood boards at la Réserve des arts (where we bought our materials from) each had different sizes and thickness, I thought it better to look for an alternative. I ended up working only with foam and pieces of fabric.

Materials and tools I used:

  • foam
  • fabric
  • cutter
  • hot glue
  • scissors
  • paper (for paper books and decorations at the end)
