The Curve ( Presentation)

 

                                  The Curve

My project for the Community Music Works building is a concrete curve that breaks the ground in two parts creating all the spaces needed for the program. The idea was to stay true to the integrity of the curve at all times. Throughout the building the visitors experience the scale of the concrete curve in relationship to the space and the human body. The Curve is strategically located so that the people from the street feel welcome to come in. Once they are inside, the curve guides them around the space until they reach the indoor theater which is adjacent to the outdoor basketball court. This adjacency provides a direct connection between the indoor theater and the exterior.

The visitors engage with the curve in very different ways throughout the building. From the streets they experience an imposing yet welcoming structure that sits 30 feet above the ground. At the threshold between the street and the building the visitors not only engage with the curve but also with the trees that appear to be puncturing the rigid structure. The trees allow natural light to bleed into the dinning area and the practice spaces located in the second floor facing south. These practice spaces are overhanging on top of the dinning area. From the ground floor the visitors can see the students playing instruments inside their classes, this should be an important moment for the visitors that have never played an instrument and that are interested in understanding what goes on in the organization.

Once the visitors are inside they have the freedom to choose either going up to the second floor where most of the practice rooms are located or go to the basement where the indoor theater is located. When a person arrives to the second floor (most likely  a student), they see the light entering from the skylights of the individual practice rooms hitting the instrument storage made out of glass creating beautiful combinations of light and shadow on the floor. The individual practice spaces face North. Some of these rooms are open, meaning that there is no separation between the room and the rest of the floor, these increases the amount of natural light that gets inside the space and guarantees more light bouncing off the instrument storage.In the same floor facing south the visitor sees the medium sized practice spaces. When the visitor enters the room they have a view of the ground floor with the trees, the light and the dining area.

When a person goes down from the ground floor to the basement they arrive to the entrance of the indoor theater. This entrance is the only time the visitor is able to move through a cut in the concrete curve. Once they have passed the threshold, they find themselves standing above instead of below the curve. The seating follows the angle of the structure. Outside there are bleachers located to the side of the indoor theater. The visitors have the opportunity to seat outside of the building and have a direct connection to anything happening inside the indoor theater. These bleachers not only serve the building, they also serve the basketball court in case there is any game happening.

The visitor from the street has the freedom to choose either going into the building or going to the outdoor theater. To go to the outdoor theater the visitor walks through a long passage until the concrete curve next to them goes into the ground. The rest of the ground after the curve turns into the outdoor theater. The visitors are able to see how the curve cuts the ground and keeps going underground to form the indoor theater through a strategically placed skylight.

My goal was to design a public building that is generous to the street and gives the visitors a good understanding of what Community Music Works is about. They see the community aspect of the organization as well as how the classes work.
