In the end, all of these artifacts have to be about teaching. And because I am concerned about teaching this last artifact is particularly relevant. The opening paragraphs of this artifact outline a perfect scenario of CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) versus Grammar Translation Method. This was the crux of the competition that was taking place in Lima, Peru, in the 1970s i.e., British versus American, Prescriptive versus Descriptive, Communication skills versus Latinate rules. It took me awhile to understand what the purpose of ESL is. Simply put, before TESOL, I might have thought an appropriate metaphor would have had something to do with stuffing a vegetable with lots of complex ingredients. What kept me up at night before I took a single class was how I was going to teach all the grammar rules in 8 weeks. I imagined using lots of pattern drills. I imagined homework assignments that would compensate for the short amount of time. Then classes began; Thornbury, Schmitt, Perrone, and all was turned on its head. Thornbury showed how the latinate rules that have been projected onto the English language since Johnson and Shakespeare, have to be viewed with suspicion. Schmitt taught Methods and Skills like the Politics of Aristotle; each succeeding chapter refutes the preceding one. And Perrone, in the nicest way you could imagine, showed me that if I wasn’t assessing my students, if I wasn’t taking their affective and educational levels into account, I wasn’t teaching. I kind of loved it, I was being taken to the back of the shed and given a good whacking, but without an actual whacking. Good on them! It was because of this that I was able to listen to my wife’s story about English education in Lima with a new set of ears. I suddenly understood that most of my students wanted an interlanguage fluency to help them integrate, to help them find a job, to help them advocate for themselves in this complicated land of America. Pretty much everything I’ve been working on this year is summed up the section, ‘A Short but Pivotal Conclusion.’ There is always more work to be done!
