Reading Reflection: The Definition of Power

In The Definition of Power, it is exclaimed that “power is everywhere.” There is always something that holds power in everything, even if it is simple. The reading further describes it “not because it embraces everything, but because it comes from everywhere.” Whether it be small or big, power is there. Power has a way of controlling us in everything we do. It’s something that we can’t control. Almost like a habit. There is always something that we can and can’t do, no matter where we go. Something I found interesting was when there was a paragraph about if there was a separation of power between war and politics. “Power is not something that is acquired, seized, or shared…” I think that even if we were able to separate power between war and politics, there would still always be someone or something that would try to bring power upon it. It would always come back. I also agree with the quote “… the rationality of power is characterized by tactics.” I agree because there are different techniques when it comes to enforcing power. Some can range from being extreme or from being harmless. What was also interesting was when it asked the question if power is something that can be escaped. “Should it be said that one is always “inside” power, there is no “escaping it…” I believe that this is somewhat true. We always experience power because it’s in most of the things we do. Whether it be simple directions at a job or a traffic law, these are rules that have power over us. Other times people can break out of this power, but there could be consequences that can be negative or positive.
