Cross-Course Reflection

My name is Kate Choo Chew and I go to Parsons school of design. I live in Queens, New York, and my major is architectural design. There are quite a few differences in my work, comparing from first semester and second semester. During the first year, I did a lot of hands-on projects. From creating cubes to shoes out of wire and even designing my own bag. During my second semester, my curriculum mostly focused on papers. A lot of the work I did was mostly writing responses, papers, essays, etc. I learned to work with different mediums and even learned new techniques.
Throughout, my academic studies and studio making, there were connections with the bridge assignments. Most of the work was to either write a proposal for my studio project or create a presentation on it. What made some of the projects more exciting was how passionate some of the teachers were, when creating them. Additionally, some of the projects, we were able to have some freedom regarding what materials we could use or in the entirety of the projects itself. One skill that I utilized was in my first-semester seminar class, my professor would allow us to create art that we were passionate about. If we weren’t passionate about it, the work wouldn’t lead to our expectations or beyond that.
Both of my highlights were from the same class. The first highlight was designing and creating a bag. It was the first time I had created a bag, but what made it even more interesting was that we had to design the bag on a social or political issue that we were passionate about. I created this bag about immigration and racism. I chose to do my project about this because it’s something I have experienced. Attending Parsons, many people thought that I was an international student just by looking at me, even though I was born and raised in New York. So the quote I sewed on my bag was “Where are your ancestors from?” But in red was “where are you from,” so it looked like this: WHERE ARE YOUr ancestors FROM? Another highlight of my first year was a trip to Kenny Scharf’s opening. He was having a gallery opening near the Whitney and my professor invited us to attend. Attending the gallery, opened my eyes on the experiences that I was lucky to have. I was able to meet him and watch him create art right in front of my eyes.
Some new things I want to try in my future is working with new mediums. I also would like to attend more gallery events, try and broaden my experiences. I would also like to create more bags and further my work with that.
