Home-Making

This photo is a group of photographs, paintings, and prints that are hung together in a non-organized fashion behind a warmly colored wall. These are personal photos and prints of mine, which I brought from home in California and have hung in my apartment here in New York. The unorganized nature of the photos, along with the variety of colors and uniqueness of each piece, bring a sense of home to the atmosphere. In a sense, it allows one to feel comfortable because of the randomness. The scattered photos exhibit a welcoming atmosphere as it may make one feel they don’t have to act a specific proper way when in this area. People mold to their surroundings and different atmospheres and decor can make people feel cozy, or can make people feel uncomfortable if their surroundings seem untouchable. I have chosen to hang photographs and pieces of art that I have brought with me from back home. These familiar looking pieces give me a sense of comfort and put me in a mental place, that I may not be in physically, which, is home. This cultivates a particular atmosphere for me. It makes my living space not as bare and seems to warm the place.

I try to always have fresh flowers in my house. This is something my mother always made sure of while growing up, and having them in my home remind me of her. My mother is a big part of my idea of “Home”  and it transforms my “House” into that idea.

Having a refrigerator A lot of the food I buy here on the East Coast is the same brand and type that I grew up with. My spices are also from home, which give the food I make here a similar taste. This provides a sense of nostalgia for me. Making me remember what I grew up eating and what my family cooked
