For my neighborhood I have chosen Carroll Gardens. Carroll Gardens in a neighborhood located in Brooklyn. It takes up about 40 city blocks, it is bounded by Degraw and Warren Streets (north), Hoyt and Smith Streets (east), Ninth Street or the Gowanus Expressway (south) and the Brooklyn Queens (BQE) and Gowanus Expressways (west). The neighborhoods that surround it are Cobble Hill to the northwest, Boerum Hill to the northeast, Gowanus to the east, Red Hook to the south and southwest, and the Columbia Street Waterfront District to the west. It has a total population of 38,353, making up .1% of Brooklyn’s entire population. According to the NYC department of City planning, there is 47.2% male and 52.8% female who reside in the neighborhood. I think the fact that there is almost an equal amount of men and women show that this neighborhood is based around families and the raising of families. The most common ages of residents are from ages 20-44, which is a common age to wed, have children and raise them. WIth children (0-19) make up 20% of the population, this fact also brings me to my first idea of Carroll Gardens being a generally family based neighborhood. This shows me that there are most likely families that make up these neighborhood. With such a large amount of working/labor involved inhabitants, one might infer that there is a decent amount of income flowing into at least 73% of the families, (which is the amount of people who are employed). 78.4% of the residents are non-hispanic, with 58.9% of that, being white alone. Half of the inhabitants have children under the age of 18, meaning the neighborhood is dense with children and families. Half of the inhabitants are also New York natives. 73% of the inhabitants are in the labor force with only 8.7% unemployed. The demographics reading almost exactly half women and half men builds onto the idea of a familial neighborhood, which an assumed decent income who live comfortably. The entire neighborhood of Carroll Gardens is made up of houses that value from $300,000 to $999,999 or more.
After Visiting Site:
I took the G from Metropolitan and got off on Carroll St. It had an extremely small town feel, which was nice coming from a big city. I walked about 3 blocks and found myself at Carroll Park, which was filled with children playing on the jungle-gym and their parents playing with them as well. On my walk there I passed beautiful brownstones, all with ‘used to be’ gardens outside of the doors. The streets are lined with cars, which made me realize it may not be the easiest thing trying to park, but there were also a surprising amount of cabs driving as well. I continued walking and passed a lot of unique looking, yet overpriced boutique shops, along with restaurants that were all on the pricey side as well. There were mainly italian and pizza restaurants but also a variety of other foods. Just as I had noticed from the census online, Carroll Gardens seems to be a upper-middle class neighborhood with many families and child friendly.
