Fantasmagorie

Emile Cohl created 2 minutes long animation called Fantasmagorie (1908), which impact the animation world hugely. Fantasmagorie is considered to be the first 2D animation; some earlier films also included stop-motion animation, but Cohl first produced a fully animated film. The animation begins with both stop-motion and live action. Throughout the animation, the main character encounters various morphing objects such as a bottle that transforms into a flower. The definition of the word fantamagorie, phantasmagoria in English, is “a constantly shifting complex succession of things seen or imagined.” When I first watched the video without any information, I felt a sense of tension and rapidness. After knowing that the title means phantasmagoria , I think the rapid shift of images and shapes truly deliver the feeling of the title “Fantamagorie”. Despite the blackboard look appearance, the animation was not drawn on blackboard but rather on paper with charcoal. The blackboard look was created by shooting each seven hundred drawings onto negative film.

Emile Cohl was also an important part of the French art movement called, “Les Arts Incohérents”, foreshadowed the surrealist and other art movements in the 20th century. Les Arts Incohérents, or Incoherent Movement, was founded by Jules Lévy in 1880s and has a characteristic such as irrational and absurd. Cohl began making films in 1908 and created more than 200 movies in his lifetime. As watching Fantasmagorie, the rapid morphing and transition of shapes as squash and stretch was really impressive.

6. Reflection

I’ve designed a chair that follows the body curve and that has a space to put one’s stuff in. I decided to use chipboard for the medium instead of wood because from the last polygon project, I’ve realized hard wood is almost burnt during the laser cutting, while soft wood is easy to laser cut, but easily breaks. Many of my classmates glued multiple chipboard, while I engraved line on the chair because I wanted to explore different approach.

At first, I could not imagine what my final object would look like. I could not find the connection between the sculpture and the chair. However, I learned about how to draw a perfectly proportioned figure by studying vitruvian man, doing figure drawings, and by creating the sculpture. For the chair, I enjoyed designing different chair designs and coming up with my own unique chair. It was interesting because every one has different looks, but every one’s face mostly follows the rule of proportion. I did not had difficulties doing the laser cutting as I did for the last project, but it was challenging to use Sketchup and draw orthographic drawings in a proper scale. However, I strive to do it by myself first and then ask help for Jose when I could not handle it. Unlike last project, I attempted to progress class by class, revise drawings, explore different approaches to prepare for the final.

Throughout the project, I learned how every objects are precisely scaled and is perfectly proportional to human’s body. This aspect has a connection to the projects and exercises that we’ve done throughout the semester. We started by learning basic elements and polygons that perfectly fits another and we applied that through re-arranging the polygons. I did not recognize the connection of the chair, sculpture, and rest of the projects, but I realized the final project was applying all the skills that we’ve learned into the real world and real object. Space and Materiality was a challenging course for me because I have struggle to scale objects accurately, but it was a thought-provoking and inspiring course, which I learned a lot and could apply these skills for designs that I am going to do in the future.

Studio_B4 Prototype

-What did you make?

During Seminar, I came up with a conclusion as a response to the negative effect of cosmetic ads. However, during Studio, I decided to question the audience and leave the answer open-ended. For the prototype, I printed my images on transparent paper and made a container.
-How did you make it?

I first took photographies of my friend wearing makeup step by step. Then I Photoshopped the image and deleted the background in order to put multiple layers when it is printed. I went to Fed-ex to print on a transparent paper, but the paper was too thin to stand still. Therefore, I explored different methods to hold the papers and came up with the container.
-Why did you make it?

By showing the process of wearing makeup and the possible effect, I wanted to inspire and question the audience. Makeup could be a form of expression, while it could have negative influence on one’s perception. Thus, I wanted to question the audience, “What is your beauty perception?”

Seminar 2_B5 Reflection

I am Dahee Byun who is studying Communication Design at Parsons. I enjoyed art when I was six years old because it allowed me to freely express my thought. However, when I came back to South Korea, I did not liked art when the art teacher forced me to color the sky in a certain color. I decided to study art and design in my senior year of high school because I was again attract by the idea that I can freely express my thought through color and texture. Moreover, the reason why I chose Communication Design as my major is because I believe visual is a “bridge” that allows easier communication and interaction between people.

During the first semester, the courses were mostly about connecting individual to the context of the world, while this semester, they were more about deep exploration of one idea as if Alice went to the wonderland and explored her identity. The skills that I’ve learned across my first year course is process, exploring, and editing. I might have done the process unconsciously, but I learned how to organize my thoughts in depth and step to step to reach my objective. In the past, I tend to just go with one idea and thought it was waste of time to approach in different direction, which ultimately lack deep thought and research. However, by brainstorming I could explore different approaches within one idea. Then by conducting thorough research or thought and constantly looking back at my work, I was able to come up with strong final work. For academic writing and studio making, I realize both of them could undergo the step to step process to reach the objective so that I can develop more strong idea.

The two highlights from my first year course would be Studio and Seminar 2 and Photography class. I was interested in cosmetic and beauty perception since middle school and I decided to do a deep research about it and came up with a question: “How does cosmetic advertisements influence women’s beauty perception?” for both Studio and Seminar 2.  During Seminar, I first did general research about the topic to have a background information, then I did research based on reliable sources. Throughout this process, I was able to do deep analysis, interpret different strategies and psychological theories, and therefore come up with a well-organized paper. I was especially satisfied with the last two paragraph where I could counter-argue possible solution and could present more practical and promising solution. For Studio, I first brainstormed several ideas and narrowed it to one idea. After I decided one idea, I kept exploring different mediums and editing the work to communicate my idea in a best way. This Thursday, I am going to present my final work, which is showing the process of wearing makeup and showing the distorted view through multiplying transparent layers. Unlike Seminar, where I came up with some solution, I wanted to question the audience, “What is your beauty perception?” by showing the process of wearing makeup and demonstrating the possible effect. The interesting thinking process that I’ve experienced through Studio and Seminar is that I could express same work in different approach.

From Photography, I did class exercise that allowed me to learn the basic functions of DSLR camera. Then I learned photoshop skills and went to several exhibitions to broaden my perspective. After these basics, our class conducted self-directed projects and was able to do deep exploration about our interest. The self-directed project was the most interesting and challenging project because I was the one who need to manage my time and progress the work. I first brainstorm and question myself, “What do I want to capture in the camera?” I had to do deep observation to seek for inspiration and explore different topics with different approach. Finally, I come up with  a unique work that has a strong identity. I’ve presented photographies that is half reality and half painting. I took a photograph of an object, drew it on canvas with acrylics paint, and place it next to the real object. Therefore, it was a combination of an abstract world and reality that questions the absolute truth. From this self-directed project, I learned how to manage my time and thought I successfully demonstrate the process and progress by exploring different mediums and undergoing trials and errors. One of the most outstanding learning from this course is that I found my interest n the topic of the class, fact and fiction, which is the boundary between abstract world and reality that I would like to pursue in the future as well.

In conclusion, from the foundation year, I learned valuable skills such as process, exploration, editing. I’ve realized that it is important to progress step by step because that allows one to build up a strong basis for the final objective. Moreover, along with the process, exploring and editing could generate another idea as I progress from doing basic exercises into coming up with my own project during Photography. From Studio and Seminar 2 and Photography class, I became interested in taking different approaches within one idea; I suggested possible solution in Seminar, while I question the audience during Studio. Moreover, I would want to keep exploring the topic fact and fiction. I believe the boundary inspires the audience to question oneself and question the absolute truth. Throughout Parsons and in the future, new skills that I would like to learn is to well-organize my thoughts and to do more deeper exploration and research about my interest.

LS Studio_Final Concept Sketch

Cosmetic industry is one of the biggest industry in the world and the advertisements that the companies expose through social media has an enormous effect especially on women. During Seminar, I focused on the negative impact that cosmetic advertisements play on women; the ads lowers one’s self-esteem and therefore makes one to have distorted self-perception. However, I found a advertising strategy called, “co-creation” that approaches on different angle. Co-creation is an advertising strategy that involves the consumers into the conversation and this empowers consumers by transferring their role from a listener into a participant. (Ex. Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign). Although there are various ads that impacts women in a negative way, these kind of ads influence women in a positive way.

The photographies that I’ve included shows different impact of viewing cosmetic advertisements (left: distorted view, right: expression). I wanted to concentrate on the express part because I believe cosmetic allows women to express themselves freely by using different colors and different mediums. The bottom image is my story board for the video I am planning to create. At first, there is a faceless and eyeless women who lost identity and therefore the world looks blurry. However, as she express herself through makeup, she gradually finds her identity, and therefore the world changes from black and white into vivid colors.

LS Studio2_Concept Board

[Concept board 1]1.Marimar Quiroa: The Beauty Blogger

Marimar Quiroa has a facial tumor called the cystic hygroma and the blockage of her lymph system has created a fluid-filled sack in her throat. Quiroa cannot eat or speak and in the past she used to talk to herself in the mirror. From this process, she began to accept herself and started activities that brought self-love and self-acceptance.

My topic is about girls and women, especially 18-25, struggling for the set beauty standard. Marimar Quiroa have overcome this illusion and obsession of fixed beauty, therefore I think it has a great relation with my topic. However, her opinion is subjective and this might provide a limited perspective, but I think it could be improved by researching people like Quiroa and have more wider view.

2. Hui Yuen Man

“This art work intends to manifest how greatly materialism can influence our perception to beauty and how powerful can the media be in distorting our ways of thinking.”

I thought Hui Yuen Man’s artwork is relevant to my research topic because she thinks that many women are influenced by media and that “endless brainwashing” have set the unrealistic beauty that distorts women’s perception of beauty. The limitation of this could be the possibility for getting off the topic. Hui Yuen Man thinks that those “standard of beauty” makes women to purchase more cosmetics and fashion items that leads to the materialistic world. The artwork could be even stronger if the artist digs more deeper into a specific area of materialism.

3. Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty

“Marilyn Minter’s sensual paintings, photographs, and videos vividly explore complex and contradictory emotions around beauty and the feminine body in American culture…The exhibition culminates in Minter’s ongoing investigation of how the beauty industry expertly creates and manipulates desire through images.”

Marilyn Minter’s work is related to my topic as well because she is producing works thinking that beauty industry “creates and manipulates” desire.

4. Hannah Altman

“The project is intended to be a pictorial representation of the unreasonable female standard of beauty. By creating set-ups that would normally be considered grotesque would it not be for the glitter, the sparkle stands out because it is the only facet of the photo that is abnormal. The women models do not seem to acknowledge the glitter as something any different than natural body fluid, which supplements the idea that women have been conditioned to go to any length in order keep up an attractive appearance. The project is meant to raise the awareness of such a ridiculous standard, and to question its morality.”

Although Hannah Altman and I have different approach to the topic, she has a similar point of view with me thinking that standard of the beauty makes women to keep up the attractive appearance. I think the limitation of the work might be the topic of beauty standard is too broad and she not mentioning the cause of such phenomenon.

5. Supervenus de Fréderic Doazan y Vandy Roc

“Inspired by plastic surgery disasters, Frédéric Doazan’s Photoshop masterpiece Supervenus is a cutting (literally) portrayal of modern beauty standards and how they’ve evolved throughout the years.”

This has a connection to my topic because it is a video that demonstrates modern beauty standard and people, especially women, trying to match themselves to the unattainable beauty. The limitation of this project would be a slight different direction than my research topic. My topic is about cosmetic advertisement, while this project is about plastic surgery therefore it might be off-topic.

[Concept board 2 (more towards advertisements)]

1. John Holcroft’s illustration

John Holcroft is a British illustrator who uses illustration for social commentary and I think his work has a deep relation to my topic because my research question is about social media effecting the perception of beauty. The limitation might be the opened or maybe vague interpretation of the effect of social media.

2. A Global Democracy Idea 9 – Disclaimers for airbrushing models

“This video Created by Global Democracy.com in 2011, the clip which
has re-surfaced all over social media this week, demonstrates the full
extent of airbrushing techniques used on models.

The purpose of the video is to encourage “mandatory disclaimers”
in advertising which state that a model has had her body digitally
manipulated in the hope of discouraging the practice of airbrushing.

The creators believe that the “perfect” body types depicted in mass
media, which are digitally enhanced, have a profound negative impact
on self-esteem of young girls and are extremely misleading”

Advertising companies create an image of perfect women that matches the standard of beauty targeting girls and women. However, in the backstage, the images are manipulated and I thought this could be a great example for my research question.

3. Dove Real Beauty Sketches

“Do you see the beauty in yourself? If someone asked you to describe yourself, what would you say? Our body image takes such a battering that feeling beautiful can be hard – in fact, sometimes we just can’t see beauty in ourselves at all. We think our self-esteem is in serious need of a boost…And since we know that feeling beautiful is the first step to living happier, more confident lives, we decided to do something about it.

That something was a daring new beauty experiment: Real Beauty Sketches. We asked women to describe themselves to FBI trained forensic artist Gil Zamora (from behind a mysterious curtain), who drew a portrait of them based on their description. ”

Dove have created a series of film for finding “Real beauty” and is talking about women who were influenced by the media and/or society, which relates to my topic. They interviewed women about self-perception and opinion about the standard of beauty, but they do not actually ask what made them to feel such feeling.

4. SK-II Celebrity endorsement example

Cosmetic brands often use the word “비밀 무기 or secret weapon” saying that the cosmetic could be one’s secret weapon and makes one attractive.  SK-II is one of the most typical brand that uses such method. They use celebrities who are admired by each age group and create an advertisement as if the actress is telling a secret of her beauty. I thought this is one of the manipulation and illusion that advertising companies uses and thought it is relative to my topic.

Q. Based on your findings so far, how can a designer make an impact on your area of research?

A.

Nested Platonic Solids

DRAWINGS OF THE NESTED SOLIDS:

DRAWINGS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL SOLID:

Octahedron – Air

Hexahedron – Earth

Tetrahedron – Fire

Star tetrahedron (Merkaba) – the energetic body of the human being, the blending of Heaven and Earth, and Male and Female.

PROCESS:

PERSONAL REFLECTION:

My first plan for this assignment was to create a dodecahedron at the most outside and a sandglass of two tetrahedrons, which contains small octahedron and cube. The meaning for my original plan was to represent the creation of world. The dodecahedron represents the universe and the two tetrahedrons represent Big Bang. Because of Big Bang (the explosion; fire), the world was created and therefore there is hexahedron (Earth) and octahedron (air) inside the fire. However, after talking with Jose, he recommended me to create a star tetrahedron with the small octahedrons and hexahedrons inside. Jose’s suggestion was a new direction, expect for using the octahedron and hexahedron being inside the tetrahedron, therefore the meaning totally changed, but I thought it would be interesting to experiment with different shapes.

It was my first time to work with such materials and to make such polygons and it was truly demanding for me. It was exiting to experiment with cardboard, wire, bristol, and straws when I was making the prototype. However, I think I was afraid of making a mistake when I am working with the final materials. From the beginning of class, we’ve learned how to draw polygons, but I never imagined our first assignment would be to come up with our own unique nested solid.

The process that I experienced was interesting yet demanding because I’ve underwent numerous trials and errors. I made the template for the tetrahedron and went to the laser cutting center, but the woods are almost burned out. Therefore I had to search for other material and decided to use soft wood, which was easily fragile. The bending machine in the making center did not worked well so I had purchase another sheet metal, cut individual triangles of octahedron, and connect them with wire. My most difficulty was to make the hexahedron fit perfectly inside the tetrahedron. The cube fit exactly when I created my prototype, but it did not worked well for my final nested solids. I wonder if I should have used thicker pipe or thicker wire for the hexahedron. Moreover, I used wire for all my connections and it was difficult to make a neat connection especially when I had to connect the tetrahedrons to make a star tetrahedron. Lastly, my wood was broken while I was carrying my nested polygon to class because someone bumped into me. I feel upset about this because I had to used super glue to connect the broken woods.

Throughout the project, I learned a lot about my surroundings because I never knew that our nature is this perfectly created. Furthermore, I learned how to be more careful and precise when producing something because I realized even 0.01 inch error makes the whole polygon a mess. I envisioned my nested solid to fit each other perfectly, which did not, but I am satisfied with my solid expect for the cubes. This project required enormous effort and time and even though I struggled a lot throughout the process, it was a thought-provoking and worthwhile project.
