Refuge Human Target

The mask is transparent; it reveals the human beneath the mask. This piece is a silent protest costume and a vehicle for understanding. Refuges have become real life human targets. They have become dehumanized. I hope to humanize the individual wearing the mask in the eyes of the outside world.

The mask is made using a vacuum former. Initially I was required to make a sculptured face for the plastic to be vacuumed onto. I made the face out of paper tape and plaster gauze.

The Little Fox and the Three Bears

Scene 1: (Dining Room)

Three bears lived in a house with three of everything; three chairs, three TVS, and three plates. The mama bear and papa bear had prepared three fluffy waffles, one for each of them and one for the little bear. With waffles too hot to eat they decided to take a walk in the woods while their waffles cooled.

Scene 2: (Forest, Dining Room and TV Room)

Trotting in the woods was a lone fox with no papa, mama, or home, with an empty stomach. The little fox stumbled upon a cottage, with a door left open. The Fox walked in. In the house she saw three chairs and most importantly three waffles. The little fox rubbed her tummy and said “yummy!” The smell of the warm waffles was all it took for the little Fox to take a few bites….. After filling up her empty stomach the little Fox heard the sound of the TV pulling her towards the living area. The fox ran for the largest TV and couch first, but found the TV and couch too big for her. Next she saw a smaller TV and couch, but again she found the TV and couch still too big for her. Last she decided to move on to the next TV set. The TV and couch were small enough for her so she started flipping channels. She fell asleep on a little couch as the sound of the TV hummed in the background.

Scene 3: (Dining Room and TV Room)

After a long walk the bears walked into the house. To their surprise things were not as they had left them. The papa bear cried, “Someone has taken a bite of my waffle!” The mama bear cried, “Someone has taken a bite of my waffle!” Next, the little bear cried, “Someone has taken a bite of my waffle, and now it’s all gone!” The bears walked into the next room and again they had noticed things weren’t as they had left them. The papa bear cried, “Someone has been using my TV and couch!” The mama bear cried, “Someone has been using my TV and couch!” Finally the little bear cried, “Someone has been using my TV and couch, and now the channel has been switched and someone is still there!”

The little Fox woke up to the roars of angry bears, terrified, and ashamed. The fox felt lost and afraid, she got up, and ran for the door. The mama bear screamed, “Not today!” Mama bear ran and jumped for the Fox.

Scene 4: (Kitchen)

The smells from Mama Bear’s and papa Bear’s cooking called for dinnertime. The little bear walked into the kitchen and said, “Yummy.” Mama bear replied, “Don’t get used to it, we don’t always have foxes walking into our home…..”
