We began this assignment by buying a mens shirt and deconstructing it so we could have an understanding of how it was put together and create a pattern from those pieces. I had a slight little issue; i ended up bringing the wrong type of shirt, so in class i had to use our teacher’s shirt. Nonetheless, i still went back and thrifted the correct type of shirt and deconstructed because i still wanted to see how it was put together and learn about that, plus i think it’s a pretty soothing and relaxing thing to do.
Making The Muslin Shirt
The next step was to put together the shirt! So i first started by cutting all the pieces and then went straight to the sewing machine. We had to use french seams and flat felled seams (fotos of the flat felled seam sample underneath). I ended up making a mistake and sewed the sleeve with a french seam, not a flat felled, so i went ahead and stitched the other sleeve with a flat felled seam (PHOTOS TO BE UPLOADED SOON).
My Original Skirt Idea
So, here is what i plan on doing for my original shirt design. As i mentioned on my ‘inspiration’ page, i want to focus on fabric with lines. I also want to have raw edges on the sleeves instead of cuffs and i might also have raw edges as the hem. I want this shirt to have a sense of roughness to it. I purposely want to make this a mans shirt but have a girl wear it. I always buy mens clothing and wear them myself and that’s a concept i want to keep for this project. I love how the oversized idea looks on myself, so i want to be able to model this shirt. I also want to include my own drawings/sketches into this project because why not! I love sketching it’s one of my biggest joys, so i want to incorporate two drawings of mine in the fabric. To do so, i have to transfer them onto the fabric which i have already tested and it works! heres a video I made to show how:

fabric choices:
once i had the fabrics that i wanted, i went on to making the pattern for the original shirt. It’s worth mentioning that since i struggled a little bit with the muslin one, I knew i wanted to keep a very simply and minimal design, and have fun with the form and prints/colors of the fabrics.
MUSLIN of Original Design:
Taking the time to make the muslin was really helpful. It allowed me to organize the way I’d sew the final version and fix some little mistakes. Surprisingly, i sewed the final version much faster than the muslin! It was a nice process.

over all, i loved the outcome of this project and i’m really happy with the shirt i made. I’ve always dreamed of being able to create something with my drawings since it’s a big part of me and who I am. It was a bit overwhelming to do everything in a week and figure all that out with our other classes, but in the end, pressure is good and its college you know? A lot of work but its worth it!
