COLUMN ON ARTEMIS TEMPLE REMIX
E X P L O R I N G I T S F O R M
Cylinder. I walked around the column several times & it uncovers a sense of continuity. Theme of e n d l e s s n e s s comes to mind. Rock. Heavy. Takes time to decompose. Also, stability. A rock is something heavy to lift from the ground, specially one this size. Feathered-like patterns is what i assumed were the carvings on the bottom of the column. Interestingly enough, once i read its description in the museum, they described it as “scale-like”, which is very contrasting to what came to my mind. ‘Feathered’ is more serene and peaceful, whereas ‘scale’ gives off an idea of eeriness.
At first, I had a clear idea of what I was carrying out to obtain this “remix” of the object; something realistic that looks very similar to it. After spending some time thinking about it, I came to terms that creating something abstract that conveys the same idea as the object, was better. First of all, i began with wire, then realized it wasn’t working at all, and decided to go on a huge limb and do something i’ve never done before by using everyday objects as my materials. I did know since the beginning that i wanted the outcome to look minimalistic, so that was my main goal.
I wanted to convey the movement and sense of the edge of the column with wire. Originally, it was meant to look messy, but eventually it became way too messy and looked unprofessional. With this i knew that using wire was not the best way to convey the idea i wanted to convey.
here we can clearly see how the wire was not working properly…so i started a new approach; using everyday objects. I began thinking and came to terms that i wanted to use an object whos weight contrasts intensely to the real object. PLASTIC SPOONS. I don’t know why, but plastic spoons came to mind and i knew i wanted to work with the head of the spoons and create some sort of pattern that reflects continuity, just like the “feather-like” carvings i observed on the column.
I began cracking the spoons so the head was broken off the body. With a hot glue gun, i started stacking them and doing so until it became a circle. The reason behind it being a circle is because PRESSURE is something constant for me, specially since i have high anxiety, I feel like there is always something i worry about and get stressed over it. It’s endless.
To expose the piece, i decided to surround it with wire to convey the feeling of roughness and heaviness that the column in reality has. Also, the 4 rings will be placed ontop of a black stand made out of a base of sponges to make it similar to the real object.
PLASTER TIME
using the plaster was something i’ve never done before, so i was very excited to work with it from the start. I kept the minimalistic look that i wanted, or tried to carry out through my whole project. The idea with this plaster piece is that i wanted to replicate the edge of the object, and i also wanted to make it interactive with people, so that when one holds it, it fits perfectly within their hands. Keeping the carvings aligned and perfectly even was a challenge, i’m not gonna lie, but in the end, the real column is ancient and full of cracks and imperfections, so it suited perfectly!
