Background Story of the project:

One of the interesting things that my grandmother told me was the fact that she had experienced foot binding. I was shocked because I had only learned about foot binding from history class and now there was a witness in my family. Then I did research on foot binding and discovered the brutality of it. This inspired me to make something that could represent the male domination of women. Generally speaking, foot-binding means to bind women’s feet with cotton wraps or bandages. Men loved the women who had the “lotus size” feet that were three inches long by two inches wide. Women kept their feet from growing normally in order to fit the “lotus size” shoe so that men would marry them. This custom didn’t stop until the early 1900s in China.

My opinion:

Nowadays, women wear high heels to make themselves look more beautiful. Isn’t this the same reason for imprisoning women; the restrictions on women haven’t changed at all. Only the form of trapping women’s thoughts has changed.

A thought on the project:

Most women own jewelry. I made this jewelry box to show that women are in love with being attractive to men. I used foam core to make the box.
