How Does Experience Change One’s Mind?
Idea of My Open Work:
-What is it?
I am interested in splatter painting and the psychology effect of how people create paintings. Therefore, I did researches on the history of splatter painting, “action painting,” by Jackson Pollock. Then I thought about making an action painting workshop as my final installation which I looked at the exhibition design technique “process art.” This topic made me to think about doing an experiment on creating an object that relates to pure personal expression but not the object itself. Then I shifted my topic to the psychology and experiment art.
How does experience change one’s mind? The way that the brain works is very abstract and delicate. I want to experiment the process of human brain, create an installation to give the entity for how do we change our mind based on experience. The ultimate goal is to prove that whatever experience we would encounter in life will lead to every decision that people make in life.
A quote from Deepak Chopra: “Our minds influence the key activity of the brain, which then influences everything; perception, cognition, thoughts and feelings, personal relationships; they’re all a projection of you.”
-How does it relate to Time and Space?
The final open work will have a tunnel with windows which creates a space for people to walk through and see the artwork. The artwork displays in a order of first made and second made. When people come in the tunnel, they see the artwork that is done by experimenters first on the right side, then they keep walking and make a small u-turn and see the artwork that is done by experimenters secondly. This makes people to experience the time of my making process.

Process of Making My Final Project:
1. I bought six foam heads and used white fabric covered most of the sculptures but showing the brain parts only.
2. Then I asked three people to be my experimenters for the video filming. This video shows the processes of three people creating two artworks individually together. They will paint on foam heads that have the brain parts showing only, and then create the first one based on their current mood and idea without any influence. After that, they watch a short video and then create a new painting according to their feelings after seeing that video. This is a substitutive way to achieve the goal of influencing one’s mind after they experienced something strong such as natural disaster.

3. I bought five 90” X 126” white cloth panels to make my tunnel.
4. I stacked two metal tables for displaying the artwork. And I cut out window shapes on panels. Put lights on the back to create a lab/experiment feeling.
Research References on This Project:
Paul Jackson Pollock:An influential American painter who is known for his unique style of drip painting. He is one of the main people in the abstract expressionist movement.
Action Painting:Action painting is a style of paintings which artists continually splattered and smeared on canvases but not carefully applied. The finished artwork emphasizes the physical act of painting itself to show artists’ concerns and motivation in a strong visualization.
Process Art:Process art is an artistic movement that focuses on the formation of the artwork, the installation, instead of the object itself. The meaning of the object deals with artist’s pure personal expression. The motivation, rationale and intentionality are the principles for process art.
Brian System: “Human brain controls body movements and other activities by sending motor impulses through spinal cord and peripheral nerves towards effector organs, specialized structures in body, receives and sends stimuli to brain for appropriate response. The human brain is composed of approximately 100 billion neurons. Modern research has demonstrated that the brain continues to create new neural pathways and alter existing ones in order to adapt to new experiences, learn new information and create new memories.”

Project Moodboard:
It was such an great experience to take this class and became interested in working with the concept of time. I learned how to use medias to develop the relationship with audience and my artwork. Media is a great tool to convey artists’ messages and how they want them to understand the work. Every project succeeds with massive front researches because knowing all the side information makes it easy for audience to understand, with a clear setting, the way you show your art. As the research process went on for this final project, my idea improved a lot and became better and better. From a general idea to a specific point of view which was the ultimate purpose for this project: giving the entity for an abstract idea. Also, a lot of great details have come out by mistakes and experiment like the stacked metal tables, I didn’t think about it at first and I just used them for convenience but it came out very effective and successful.
I realized the importance for designing that it should always involve interaction with the audience whether it is physically or mentally. I am majoring in strategic design and management which needs the skill of comparing and researching. It is a business major so how I can become different from others is to use the skill of art and media design. This class opens my mind to a new world which I could create art and use it effectively. I have becomes so interested in filming making because it is such a decision making and manipulating thought process to make a film. I would like to develop more in the film making field.
Above all, I am looking forward to my second year because I would be taking my core classes for my major. It would be a new start and I am excited about it!!
