Artist statement

How to format your post? In several sessions, seek to free-write on the following questions, allowing yourself freedom to explore thoughts, memories, and connections.

  1. Write a short bio to set the stage. Introduce yourself, your major, where you’re from, and primary art/design interests.

My name is Eugene Chang. I was born in New York city. Currently studying product design at The New School of Design.

  1. Describe your work. What do you make? What are the formal qualities?

My work is a representation of my exploration of forms in a limitless digital space on my computer.

  1. Describe your aesthetic values. In what ways do your projects communicate these?

My aesthetic values rely a lot on the form of my product. There are two directions of forms, very organic or geometric and I really push those in my projects. Organic and geometric forms are what we as humans are very attracted to.

  1. How do you create your work? What tools are essential? What are your methods of making?

The tools I use to create my work are CNCs or 3D printers. Because I explore forms and design in a digital land scape, I have the file ready by the time I choose my design. Therefore, I am able to input that into a machine and tell it what to do. I try to push the boundaries of the forms I make so it can only be made with additive manufacturing. The sense of achieving an object that is very difficult to achieve brings satisfactions.

  1. Why do you make what you make? Why is it important to you? To others?

I make what I make because I do my best to stand out. I own a company that provides 3D printing and digital manufacturing services. Therefore, I make things to learn. The only way to learn a machine or tool better is to use it and that is why I make anything and everything I want. I would say the successful form explorations can be sold as home décor but would need a lot more development for it to be sold.

  1. How do your research interests inform/intersect with your creative practice?

I spend a lot of time watching tutorials on Youtube. This allows me to learn at my own pace. Youtube has taken over the search engine of google because we as humans are visual learners. Watching a video is a lot easier to follow along and learn. I also watch a lot of reviews on the latest technology out on the market. Keeping up to date and seeing a full run through of the product without having the actual product gives me a good idea of it. Tutorials on 3D modeling programs allows me to expand my explorations of forms in a digital space.

  1. Looking forward, where are you going in your art/design profession? What do you hope to achieve? What specific steps will you take to work toward these goals?

I hope to see myself moving into product development with the products I have so far. I hope to always continue form exploration and creating products out of that. I want to be able to have a fully developed website with products where friends and family and people from around the world can order.
