Title of Work: The Crown

The Crown is subject to two opposite meanings drawing form three different elements: a crown of thorns, roses, and swallowing rose and having it come out whole.

The first meaning takes a dark tone, oppressive and sacrificial. It resembles the crown of thorns which Jesus wore during the crucifixion, representing salvation through death, old customs and traditions deemed as useless through the innocent blood of Jesus, and a rebirth of love, beauty, and life but only as a result of death. Roses, a symbol of pleasure and love, are still not without thorns. And to swallow one, chew it up, and have it come out again whole, represents a rebirth, tying into the Christian tradition of being “born again”.

The second meaning The Crown can take is light, giving the feeling of freedom and playfulness. The oversized crown looks similar to as if a small child had found it and put it on to play on summer’s day, running barefoot and eating flowers, doing whatever they please.
