Derive III

Derive Part Two Reflections

My derive project explored the mapping of memories: how one image reminds us of a memory, which reminds us of another memory, which reminds us of another, and so on.  During my derive, I was most impacted by the memories that arose from past seasons of my life, completely unrelated to my derive, were correlated by some image or flower or statue or person in the garden. I wanted to give the viewer an interactive experience, where they could choose their own trail of destiny within the art piece, as we do in our own lives and thoughts. I chose to create a video game which corresponded which a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book written for Seminar. The viewer can walk around the game, and if they land on a certain object, are instructed to read a certain page.

If I were to do another version, I would make the video game independent from the book, as the book is already independent of the video game. I would add more animation effects, music, and players to choose from. There would be advancing levels of the game with each one a different section of the derive location. The player would also be able to choose the location of their derive based off of locations or neighborhoods around Paris (hypothetically, the video game world would be an interactive map of Paris). Each level of each game would become more and more abstract psychologically, mirroring how the deeper you are into your derive, perhaps the more abstract your thoughts are. I would also add certain objects or characters inside the game world that ask the player questions, and an answer box in which the player can type a simple answer. Their answer would lead them to a different section of the derive. I would have also added a backpack for the player, showing objects they collect on their derive, and objects they can give away to characters they encounter on their derive.
