I don’t really want to post something so defining as sense and nonsense, but I’d rather just express a little bit about my thoughts I jotted down during the reading. I feel that coming up with a sense and nonsense makes me think a certain kind of way that I am not comfortable with. I hope that’s okay.
Initially, I understand totally why Malcom balked at so many attempts to get this thing going. I wonder, in fact, if these attempts are in the exact order that it all happened. If so, I can feel the frustration in the tone of her introductions, but only after reading about the first ten does she seem to hit a groove that later in the reading you begin to see that they are the same openings with a different flavor or tone. The 41 First Starts is kind of a 4 dimensional approach where not only are we getting multiple insights to the artist, but also the author herself. It’s very interesting and sometimes I don’t know who I am more infatuated with getting to know. I enjoyed opening number 17 because it all felt so honest in contrast to some of the artificial openings. There was stark honesty from Malcom and from Salle which is something that I tend to take a more intimate approach, or receipt, and that would be enough to get my attention.
I don’t get the idea that Malcom is a fan of his art, but definitely a friend and fan of the person behind the art. There is this struggle, I feel, that she has with trying to illustrate several openings by trying to merit his art but I get more of a commemorative tone like his work was once great during a time in the 1980’s but now he is a wilting flower and struggles with his art.
41 First Starts felt exactly like 41 first starts. Stop, and go again. Wait. Stop. Okay, now go.
In addition, I feel like some people are so good at writing that it all sounds like foreign language to me in my mind. It’s an incredible construction of words.
