This piece really dives into Deleuzes theories of The Movement Image and Chion’s semantic theories of sound. First I needed to create a story in which I could bring to life through film and sound. My concept began with ideas like a bugs life to time travel but after shooting a few impromptu scenes with a friend I stumbled upon an idea and ran with it. The story is about a man who lives eternally on this planet and is aware of his ageless existence. His world is a living horror and the only way to perish and move on to the afterlife is to seek and destroy the nightmares of a demon from the underworld.
Narration over the film is a way that I can capture the story with the audience in a short amount of time since there is no dialogue. Narration is a mode of semantic listening which refers to a code or language to interpret a message. In this case the message is the voice and language of the character to tell the story. As you will also notice, there is a thrilling soundtrack that will accompany the voice of the omniscient narrator. The sounds are dark and mysterious to capture mood and helps tell the story. The voice wouldn’t be as effective without the music and the music wouldn’t be effective without the narrator. Together they form a code or language that is complete for the viewer to understand the story.
There are many great concepts of Deleuzes theories of movement, but I will touch up on the ones that I used to effectively produce my short film. The first and most important is the shot or the frame. What is in the frame and what is in focus? For me, I couldn’t employ the power of depth of field because of my recent loss of equipment on the subway. Therefore, I was forced to create shots so that the moving image wouldn’t look 2 dimensional. I shot on a city block full of parked cars to create the depth of field. The next is mobility of the camera and how it moves around the scene. I used a lot of camera movement to emphasize moments of triumph, despair, and urgency. There are two shots where a spiral camera effect gives the character power and strength. The final concept that is important to my film is the Cut. The cut is the way one shot transitions to the next and precisely when and how. In my case I tried to cut to the dialogue to move the story more naturally.
