Sound/Video Project 3 – Final

The time has come where we combine our sound and video projects to create a cohesive, or non-cohesive, piece that represents our concepts that we chose at the beginning of the project. I chose the feeling of anxiety.  It’s very conceptual. A story inside of a story inside of a story. There are 3 things going on.

  1. My project. It begins with the opening credits and ends with the opening credits.
  2. The character. As he stares at the clock, he begins to experience the feelings of anxiety for whatever reason that time has him hostage.
  3. The characters anxiety. After the “Time Sequence”  where I shot the clock and the character, the character seems to go for a walk. This is the beginning of his mind wandering. It ends when you think he has committed suicide. Actually it ends when you see the time lapse of the Williamsburg Bridge. It symbolizes that time has passed and his anxiety has ended.

The ending recaps the entire short film in a hyper speed reverse.  It’s like an explosion in the beginning that gets sucked into a vacuum in the end.

I created a sequence of sounds I found online to create a very dramatic hit to capture the feeling.  I feel that based on the different modes of listening, the audience is more engaged in Reduced Listening as described by Michel Chion in the 3 Modes of Listening.  Listeners aren’t quite sure what the sounds source is, nor can they really characterize or define the source.  Reduced listening focuses on the traits of the sound itself rather than the source.  The sounds I used have nothing to do with the source, it creates something separate, like a feeling.

In the video, I shot minimal extreme close ups, and a balance between medium and wide angle shots.  I used some color correction and color grading to enhance the drama and emotions.  According to Pierce’s explanation of 3rdness, I feel that my video is more in line with sympathizing with the character rather than actually experiencing the emotions as the character does.
