Project 4 – Time:METRO – Presentation on Pierce’s Theory of Thirdness

I began my research on Pierce’s Theory of Thirdness by looking at online articles.  After discovering several posts by either students studying the same theory or by another figure of some importance, I found that this theory wasn’t really that dense in material or explanation.  Mostly the content was college students using fancy words and making connections to this Thirdness, or larger perspective, through Piercean theories of Firstness or Secondness.  Doing research was like riding a merry-go-round because I kept reading the same thing over and over again by different authors.  This site,

was probably the most helpful in spreading the butter across the toast.  I was glad that Piece called himself out a bit saying that his semiotics was merely “speculative rhetoric”.  I see this theory as completely rhetorical, but then again I am just a freshman at Parsons that isn’t doing extensive research to debunk my own ignorance.  I am just building a book that can give the user/reader the experience of the basic concept of Thirdness. With that in mind, I conceptualized this book in an unconventional fashion.  It’s not a typical book, but I thought that I could create something made of panels that would form something in the end by traveling through secondness.  The existence of these panels and the way they have to be arranged will give meaning to the final layout, which is exactly Thirdness.
