The Monument
I found that the only way I can write about poetry is to just write. I begin to read the description of these boxes and immediately I am bored (or board..haha). The description goes on until there is some dialogue in which one character says “Why did you bring me here to see it?…” Whew. I thought I was the only one. I have read this poem 3 times in intervals to make sure I wasn’t trying to force feed myself, yet still I can’t deter myself from feeling like no matter how this monument is described it’s still just a piece of wood. I even played the video and the segments move along too quickly to actually read it, so I thought maybe if I tried to rap it out loud and try to read it at a fantastic speed then I would pick up on some poetics. I failed in both categories. I will read this again tomorrow and edit this post if a new meaning dawns on me.
UPDATE (Wed.) – Okay. So today I thought about this poem after walking back home from the gym and I saw a huge crane in the middle of the road fully extended towards the sky. The oversized vehicle was elevated because the outriggers were extended and engaged, all four of them were resting on cross stacked pieces of wood to prevent any damage to the concrete. I thought, “wow that thing is so heavy and that wood is so strong.” It made me think of this poem and how the wood was stacked and aged yet strong. I am not sure if that’s the meaning of the poem, but I feel a bit of clarity.
The Fish
Well, I was really excited to write what I had in my thoughts as I read The Fish, but the ending really threw me off. Regardless of the ending, I kind of enjoyed this poem because I enjoy fishing and I have a lot of childhood memories of catching fish with my dad and friends. Anyways, the way the author was talking about his catch made me think of the way two old enemies look at each other before one dies, but before death the two make amends. I was thrown off by the oil and rainbows. Only thing I could think of is that the fish is still alive but ready to give up when this guys boat gets surrounded by other fish, so he lets old man fish go get other ones. I really don’t have a nonsense for this except the ending threw me off.
Side Note.
We have been reading more literature in class than poems, so I look forward to talking about these to see what I am missing and what other students picked up from it.
