Responds of The Principles of Three Dimensional Design by Wucius Wong

I am satisfied with Wucius Wong’s principles of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design. The summary of the elements in two-dimensional and three-dimensional design is essential points that one should be careful when they are doing designs. Two dimensional design is not just focus on line variety, movements, color, shape and texture themselves, but also play with the relation between theses elements in gestalt way.

Specifically, the desk (A Bit of Zen) that is designed by Carlo Zen in 1902 has shown strong connections between lines, shape and texture. The smooth surface of the desk really matches the slow and gentle lines of the desk legs. While the line weight of the legs are moving from thick to thin along the top to the bottom, they create more stable structure to support the whole desk as well as making negative shapes between the legs and the plane.

1.The aim of three-dimensional design is to create a space that provides more dedicated connections between lines, texture, color, size, and materials. Harmoniously connect these elements and provide better visual design is the crucial part of making three-dimensional design.

2.A three-dimensional designer should be able to think of the form in various views, and concern about the connection between space, shape, size, depth and even materials using. All of theses elements will affect the final design.

3.The three primary directions of three-dimensional design are the vertical, horizontal, and transverse directions. These views can help with expressing the form of a design, which take the most part on displaying the continuum of space and the whole structure. Also, different views may change the feeling of an artwork; it might be dynamic with various perspectives, even looking at it from a small angle would change the whole understanding of the work.

4. Point, line, plane, and volume are the conceptual elements of three-dimensional design. When I do the wire project, I need to think of the connections of line and volume. I am trying to use line to create negative space and imply the volume.

5. I use different ways to wrap wires and create various waves with quick lines and slow lines, and play with thickness of wires. Two of the wires on each side are twisted together which can make thicker lines to support the whole structure. The lines in my drawing show the complexity of different line movements. Yet, they also have a set of patterns display in the main part. The whole drawing indicates the mass and weight that are provided by the lines.
