I’m xiaoxuan Fu, a junior fashion design student at The New School of Parsons, mainly focusing on unisex design. Based on my Chinese culture background, I love to do textile designs with natural materials and handmade techniques like knitting, weaving, felting and natural dyeing. As there is tons of pollution caused by fashion waste with chemical dyes, it results in unhealthy soil and directly influence human health, so I care about sustainability through all my designs by creating high quality, natural and recyclable garments. Specifically, yarn has been my closed friend since last year. In order to create comfortable, calming and nontoxic clothes, I tested several knitting and weaving techniques to keep my design simple in the silhouette but with delicate texture in detail, and chose color according to physiology aspect, which related to human emotions. The process of making brought a lot of fun and unexpected result. Different sizes of yarn needles, 100% cotton yarn and indigo dyes are frequently used in my previous designs. My favorite design method is to keep the material as simple as possible and emphasis more on its texture, I believe this kind of style can keep away from fashion trend and make the garment itself more valuable in a long-term view. Therefore, I will continue doing non-trend style and testing more hand made techniques with natural fibers to create playful and reliable designs in the future.
