The Stuyvesant Square Park is divided into two different parts. Although the two sections have similar, if not exact, shapes, the atmospheres, environment and smells were extremely contrasting. The first park we visited was separated into two parts as well, because half is under construction. We visited the open half in the morning as well as at night, and the smells seemed to change according to the time of day. The morning smells were much more fresh. There was a breeze flowing through the park, making any unpleasant stenches bearable. We smelled the perfume of a woman, a couple of cigarettes, and a man’s KFC box of fried chicken. We visited the park again as it became night and the smells were completely different. Homeless people were lined along the benches, and the smell grew stronger as we approached them. We continued to walk; the garbage cans filled with a day’s worth of unfinished sandwiches and half-drunken coffees gave off quite the scent. cigarette smoke remained the same as the morning, not to mention the obvious marijuana, as people stood in bunches scattered around the park. The collected pollution of Manhattan was there, of course, but it seemed less noticeable than the rest because it is constantly around.

All the smells experienced while in Stuyvesant Park created different emotions and reactions for us all. A relaxed energy was felt while visiting the park in the morning. Relaxed, yet anticipation also trickled as the city slowly entered it’s daily hustle and bustle. The smells of food created a comforting feeling along with quite the craving. The stench of garbage made our faces scrunch with disgust while the marijuana made us curious to look around us. Nostalgia, nausea, comfort, and more arose in our minds as we visited morning and night. The park and it’s inhabitants create effects on crowds, unbeknownst to them, as hundreds visit and carry on life, each day.
