Less is More Hoodie

Research & Sketch

Design Statement

Out of my three original sketches, I decided to go with the third one. This design was inspired by the “ancestor” of modern hoodie, which is the traditional clothing of medieval monk. And the mask-hood was inspired by the anonymity of hoodie which was popularized with the rising of hip-hop culture.

In order to create the exaggerated shape and volume, I chose to use medium weight neoprene. However it did  not go exactly as I planned, I had to alter my design according to the construction requirement. Also, in oder to make my design a zero waste piece, I chose to create a patten based on ancient Chinese garments which can also bring a lot of volume and a nice shape to my design. During the process of making the muslin sample and the real garment, I overcame many challenges, hard and easy, and learned how to use and thread pearl stick machine, overlock machine, super lock machine, and super lock machine. I also learned that you should always be calm and smart to anything  happened (for examples, your fabric was cut wrong, you have to change your pattern without too much time to think), you and your garment will be fine.

In the final photo shoot, I was the model and my friend Kristin took the pictures for me. It was a rainy day in the Lower East Side. Although it is cold, the cloudy and chaotic background surprisingly enhanced the anonymity of my design.
