Body as Form

This piece was inspired by the piece of writing, Call Me Gaia. Inspiration is a thing that every artist craves. We spend days and weeks and months and years looking all over the world for it because it loves to hide from us. It hides from us in places that it knows we would never look. That’s why we should learn to wait for inspiration to find us. Anyway, my inspiration was hidden in this article that I probably wouldn’t have ever laid eyes on if it wasn’t for Carolyn! (shout out!) In this article, Earth is talking to her people. She is telling us not to forget about her and to take care of her. She is telling us that we are more similar than anyone would expect. “We are one and the same”, she says. It was those words that inspired this piece. I knew my piece had to relate to the human body, so connecting the human with its home was a perfect idea. My plan was to create a tall tree trunk with my arm and have my fingers extend out and turn into the roots of the Earth; the idea that we are one would be shining through. After a few days of mixing, pouring, drying and sanding, my tree trunk arm was complete and ready for display.
