Bridge 3: Beauty

Phase 1: Research

Mind Map:

Magazine Mark-Ups:

Concepts:

  1. Visiting different countries around the world and sharing their specific beauty rituals – maybe just focus on one area (face, lips, etc)
  2. Road trip across the US and picking up different outrageous beauty rituals on the way.
  3. Natural beauty – how can nature around us be used to benefit our body and looks. (fruits, vegetables, plants)
  4. Using meals as beauty regimes. Look at a plate and find a use for everything on it.

Phase 2: Progress Update

New concept:

The serious message I want to convey is that attention shouldn’t really be something that so many of us crave. Humans are brought up to have a constant desire for validation from others and when they gain that validation they feel like they belong. Life shouldn’t be about being validated from others, it should be about being validated by yourself. All people want to do is stand out and society is often encouraging us to being different/stand out, but when all eyes are on you and more people are watching, people can begin to break down because of the negative aspects of attention they hadn’t thought about.

I am using satire to get my message across by writing articles on how to get all eyes on you. I will share secrets about getting the most attention in a room, I am going to write about the exact opposite of what my serious message enforces. Using reverse psychology sometimes makes the message more clear.

a)

-what colors you should wear to make people stare

-what scent to wear to make people’s head turn

-how to develop a social media fan base

-how to name your fan base

-how to talk to your fans and make them seem special

-how to manage your instagram account once you get over 5k followers

-what time should you post? what hour are people on instagram the most?

-“Where’s Waldo” game to show what makes you stand out from a crowd

-what clothing material are reflective and drawn the most attention to you when your in the club with flashing lights on you

-article on famous celebrities who were killed by fame (serious article in mixed in to make people think)

-how to get more followers

-how to get people to notice you on the street

Phase 3: Progress Update

This week I built the basic skeleton for my magazine. I also planned and executed my photoshoot.

Phase 4 Progress Update:

FINAL!:

Reflection:

I struggled to find a topic I was passionate about for a while. I was considering doing a magazine about prison life, then I wanted to make my magazine about art student life, but I finally found the topic I was looking for which was attention. I have always been interested in fame and celebrities so this was a topic I knew a lot of information about.

Once I decided on my topic I started thinking about what I wanted my magazine to look like. Attention is a subject that is often covered in tabloid magazines (People, Us, etc). Since the assignment was to create a satirical magazine, I wanted it to visually be the opposite of what was expected. And the expectation was that my magazine was going to be cluttered and colorful and all over the place like a tabloid magazine would be.

I made my magazine clean, simple and united which is not something you would expect based on the topic. The consistent blue should be calming to the reader. I wanted each piece of my magazine to clearly connect to the overall topic.

For my photoshoot I decided to put my model in a mirrored elevator, because what says attention more than mirrors. Having Juliette surrounded by mirrors and having all sides of her being shown at all times connected my photoshoot to the theme of attention.

My feature article is about celebrities being driven to their own death because of their fame. This is a topic that if often in the news and I thought it would be very relevant in my magazine. I needed to make the article satirical so I added a sarcastic flavor that has the attitude that “even if fame kills you, at least you got to be famous.”

I have two smaller articles also focusing on attention. One is about what to wear to get the most attention from 4 different senses (sight, sound, smell and touch). And the other is telling the reader how to manage their Instagram account if they have over 5,000 followers.

I chose to put an advertisement for a personal paparazzi on the back of the magazine because the paparazzi take your photo and share it with the world which gives you more attention.
The magazine is very clean cut and neat looking, but I wanted to add a personal flavor so I hand drew a few images that appear in the magazine. The coffin, the 4 senses and the Instagram notifications are doodles that give the magazine some more texture.

Overall I think my magazine is very unified and connected, visually as well as the content and I am proud of how it turned out.
