235 Bowery

History:

  • 235 Bowery opened in 1876 on Thanksgiving as The London Theatre
  • In 1909 it was transformed to a Yiddish theater called the Lipzen Theatre
  • In 1913 the theater was known as the Variety Theatre, vaudeville and movies were shown
  • 1916 – Italian Playhouse
  • 1924 – Caruso Theatre
  • 1926 – Chinese Theater
  • 1930 – 235 Bowery was purchased, ended the tradition of theater in that building.
  • 2006 – New Museum was opened and is still there
