Bridge 5: Seminar Assignment

Part 1:

I learned in studio class to look back in my memories in a new perspective and presented it in 3D. It’s hard to express a story in a 3D object, because it doesn’t have the literal narrations unless the narration is written on the object. I could only take the symbols in my stories and transform them into elements of my work.(Bridge Project1) I also made a gift for my friend in studio class. I was asked to complete one thing that my friend want to do in New York City and made a “letter” to her according to my own experience. I was most excited about this project, because I found that it’s weird but fascinating. This project also inspired me of the Bridge project 5. I’m thinking about the relationship between locations/experience and people. Although people may want to do the same thing or go to the same location, everyone’s experience is unique and belongs to their own. In seminar class, I learned some useful interview skills. Lauren’s story about her interviewing is very helpful! (Bridge Project2) In project 3 and 4, I explored SoHo deeply both in studio class and seminar class. People usually see the glamorous surface of SoHo, but with the projects, I found another unpleasant side of SoHo. In seminar class, I even made surveys and asked people on the streets of SoHo. I’m glad that I had the chance to dig into a neighborhood and learned a lot from my observation and interpretation. (Bridge Project 3&4) In seminar class, I learned a lot of famous artists and their works. It’s my favorite part of the seminar class. These artists and their works really inspired me, especially performance artist Marina Abramovic. I knew her several years ago about her performance at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. But in seminar class, I learned a lot more and deeper about Marina. The most shocking performance I learned about her in seminar class is the Space In Between. Marina and Ulay stood at the entrance of an exhibition both naked and facing each other. The space between them can only allow one person edges his way into the exhibition. Every visitor needs to make a choice of either face male or face female. This performance really inspired me a lot. To Marina, performance art is all about the present. Every performance art she did involves the present audiences and is unrepeatable. I love the little game we played at the seminar class which is a little micmic version of one of Marina’s performance. I also really enjoyed those little games we played at the beginning of every class. It really relaxes me and makes me less tired about the following lecture. I also think talking nots are thoughtful assignments and good exercises for me. I think nowadays students don’t have the time and also aren’t willing to read an entire book. Those short articles of talking notes give me something to take in and think about, but are not too long at the same time. I really had a great time in studio class and seminar class this semester!

Part 2:

I would like to learn about people who dress clothes that don’t follow their identity in my dream project, and people who like to wear non-gender clothes. I’m interested in non-gender clothing because I remembered that when I was a kid, I always wore jeans rather than pink dresses. And I liked to see action movies rather than romantic movies. But my parents and elders didn’t understand me and said, “A girl should looks like a girl.” I was angry and confused about why I can’t wear clothes that I want to wear at that time. As I grow up, I found that the society has too many stereotypes and restrictions on identities. Situations are even tougher to those boys who like pink dresses and barbies. So I want to learn about people’s thoughts of genders in clothing. I believe people feel the most confident and comfortable when they wear clothings they want to wear. Also, I found that nowadays non-gender brands’ clothings are almost all black, gray and white, and the styles are also rigid. I also want to break this kind of stereotype that people don’t follow their identities wearing garments can only wear boring clothings in order to be gender-neutral. In order to achieve this goal, I need to do some experiments on materials and types of clothes. Also, I need to study the history of identity, and do some researches about nowadays non-gender brands, such as Comme Des Garcons which is a very experimental non-gender brand, and I would like to learn from their experiences.
