Integrative seminar: Bridge2 part1 – 7 day reflection

Theme: Class

Day 1:

I went to the David Hockney exhibition at Metropolitan museum that day. I was shocked by David Hockney’s use of color and shape, which really represent dreamlike realistic scenes. The one work that really caught my eyes is the last work from the above pictures. Hockney uses many sections from various perspective to describe one situation, which really inspires me of how a thing or a topic can be viewed from different ways.

Day 2:

The first picture is a vintage store near the university center of the  new school. The second picture is inside look of a Chanel store that I site from the internet. I find it’s really interesting of how the big contrast of inside arrangement between two different clothing store relates to their customer groups. In the vintage store, clothes are thickly dotted together, however, in Chanel store, clothes are loosely hang on the clothes rack, which customers can see through every kind of clothing. Even without the brand’s name, it’s really apparent which store has more exclusive customers from the pictures.

Day 3:

This is a really fascinating pictures I took. At that day, my friend came over and hang out with me at my apartment, and she talked about how she was losing sleep lately. I recommended the melatonin I was eating, and took some pills to her letting her to have a try. But then I found out I ran out of plastic food bag at my apartment at that time. I suddenly think about the plastic gloves, so I took one of them and putted the pills in. I found it creates an interesting combination that a thing without using its original purpose could offer a solution to a certain kind of problem. This happy accident inspires me that sometimes things could have different effects if not considering their original purposes.

Day 4:

This is a picture I found on internet. What caught my attention in this picture is the contrast and cohesive in these two figures. They are doing the most intimidate action between two humans — kiss, but one of them is a lifeless sculpture. The red all-caption text written on the sculpture forms an eye-catching contrast, and forms a complete sentence with the text written on the women’s face. With the closed eye of the women and the texts, I can feel the feeling of agonizing resonated inside me. Also, it’s very ironic to me that the person struggling in the picture is a female, which can be interpreted from many themes: class, identity, gender, etc. …

Day 5:

Day 6:

I want to focus on the common features between poverty/normal people class and rich class. I feel like when I’m doing researches, most common features shared between classes are not practical things, such as information, education, human rights, dignity, etc. … Also, classes stay relatively the same in nowadays society, because property and social status can be delivered through generations. Rich kids are born with wealthy and high social status, and poor kids vise versa.

Day 7:

This is a picture I found on Pinterest. The artist states: “I make collages from newspapers, mixing up one image with another, usually found from the same newspaper examining the craziness of the modern world. All of my images are hand-made, without the use of computers. I find the images in newspapers, magazines given on trains, buses and bins.” I found it’s so fascinating of how the artist finds the similarity between the line up of African kids with water basket and models from fashion runway show. It’s the same action that represents two classes. By simply seeing figures are collaged together, I felt a sense of ironic of the issue that the artist wants the society to see.
