Painting Project Inspiration Post

Step 1: Topic: Bust of Danielle with Butterfly tattoos- Mixed Media Piece- Photography (photoshop) with butterfly “tattoo’s” created out of acrylic or oil on top.

*Concept came from this thought:

When a butterfly dies their bodies do not decompose, they remain in their natural state of beauty forever.

Similar to artist Damien Hirst, my family and I share this love for butterflies. To us, a butterfly symbolizes beauty, life and faith. When a butterfly flutters by, it is a sign to never give up and that a loved one is near and will stand by you every step of the way.

The year was 2011, and the month was January. That was around the time that the truth behind my family secret would be revealed. It began with the realization that my grandfather that i’ve known my entire life, was not my biological grandfather, and that I had another aunt that my mother had no recollection of. Once the truth behind this information was revealed things began to change. My grandfather otherwise known as gaga, went from a warm dominant figure in my life, to a distant memory of one. My aunts began treating me like an outsider, and my grandmother started to isolate my family and I from all of the high holiday events. I remember her saying, “It is what’s best for the family at this time, but we can come over for dessert afterwards if you want?” “I did not want dessert” I replied, “I wanted dinner.”

Aside from the negative effect of losing the love from a few of my family members, one of the most beautiful, loving, spiritual, intelligent, wise, and caring women I have ever met just entered my life. She was my butterfly. If it wasn’t for this incident, I would have never met the most inspirational person and for that I am grateful it happened. Danielle has taught my family and I so much about appreciating every moment that you live, and to follow your hopes and dreams. She has gone through hell and back, and still completes the day with her high heels on. When I met my Uncle Marc and Aunt Danielle, Danielle taught me about her philosophy behind butterflies, and how they represent good energy and that her grandmother (who is also my mother’s grandmother) is near. Within that moment I told her, “you are my butterfly.”

The day before I left for New York I decided that I wanted to mark myself with something that would always remind me of my aunt and how she never gives up. That is why I went against my families so called “old religious beliefs” and tattooed a symplicit  butterfly upon my foot. It symbolizes that no matter what I will always have a family member by my side every step of the way throughout my journey in life.

Step 2:  Materials: Photography on Canvas/ Photography transfer on paper. Oil or Acrylic painting of butterflies on photography piece (Replicating tattoo perception)

-Colors/ Setup: Natural Lighting- Photograph of aunt. Debating on back ground of canvas/paper being black or white. Than in photoshop I will edit her to look like a bust, as well as do a few touch ups and go over things. Next I have to test whether I like the subject with black or white background (this depends on the mood I am going for. *Am i looking for a deep and dark thought or a white light nervous perception* (I am leaning more towards the white, because of the history behind the piece being a touchy subject and nervous and still slightly hidden. I am choosing natural lighting because I have always done my pieces in natural light and to continue this pattern I am going to do this. I am going to test out transferring the image on paper and canvas with acetone and majepaje etc. If all fails with that Than I will print out the image directly onto a canvas. Than I will cure the canvas/ paper in order to paint on top of the piece. Next I will paint butterflies on the bust figure of my aunt. In order to replicate the idea of tattoos. The tattoos will be painted in either oil or acrylic. As for colors, they will either be in warm and cool greys depending on the area the tattoo is in, or I will use symbolic colors such as blue, purple, pink, black and white. Blue and purple represent the colors I identify with as my self and so does my aunt, pink (to demonstrate the cliche of a women) and black and white to represent the tones we wear and how life can be seen either in light or darkness.

Drawing Project 1: Core Studio 1: 2D

Final Result:studio-1-first-project

For my project, I based it off of my walk in Times Square. I chose this walk in particular, because of the prominent experience i had. I noticed my ADHD at an all time high, my colorblindness at full effect, which all lead to an overflow of anxiety. To demonstrate these disabilities, also Marcel Van Eeden’s piece, I decided to approach the project in a more symbolic form. I wanted to touch on times squares main purposes which are food, lights, shows and disorganization. To begin, I chose to have the entire piece in black and white to represent how dogs are color blind (as well as relate it to Marvel Van Eeden’s piece), except for the corner piece. The corner piece, is of two puzzle pieces. The larger one is intended to represent me and the color that happens to be my favorite yet hardest to identify. The smaller puzzle piece is rainbow sparkle, to represent the multiple colors in times square, also the people in that location. Next I chose to have the plays represent my life according the most relevant instances. Such as, ‘Kinky Boots’ (For my experience when entering Parsons- A lot of drag events), RENT (One of my favorite plays, and a play I used to relate my friend group to quite often), and lastly The Lion King (A play/movie my father used to quote through out my childhood in order to teach me a lesson and some how teach me about my roots.) As for the restaurants, I chose two restaurants which I have no affiliation with, although relate to me. Mcdonald’s, for the purpose of an eating disability I struggle with on and off, and TGI Fridays, because who doesn’t love the weekend? As for the puzzle piece, they are supposed to represent human disabilities as a whole, and the crowdedness of people in Times Square. I chose the random driving signals, to represent time, and the assignment (walking). Overall, I believe I had quite a difficult time finishing this assignment. I chose a different approach to it than I am used to, and for sake of organization skills I believe it worked but for the sake of art I disagree. I chose to use charcoal, pen, marker, acrylic, laser cutter, pencil and plexi glass for this piece.

Int. Studio 2: Catalyst Critique- Prao “Box of Goods”

Prao- “Box of Goods”:

For Prao’s catalyst project she essentially invented a box which had the ability to cook anything she wanted it to, as well as clean and wake her up in the morning (which Prao for sure needed). She imagined the arms would be made out of metal coils, which gave the catalyst the ability to stretch, move and shorten its arms when ever it desired. Located at the machines sides were where it would store the food and the cooking and cleaning equipment as well. On top of the box was where the stoves would be located and in the frontal section is the oven. She also designed the machine to have speakers and cameras which allows the catalyst to see what is infront of it so it can move accordingly. I truthfully believe that this catalyst invention is quite innovative, and creative and definitely resourceful. Although, aside from the catalyst being a splendid idea, I discovered  a few problems. One being, how would the machine be generated? Another, how will it be wired, will it affect the environment (maybe you should include uv ray panels), and how will it know what to do? I think you could maybe design the machine to be customizable. Meaning that if you don’t need certain aspects, such as a stove maybe you can replace it with something else that would be more useful to the buyer. Another thought that occurred to me was the idea that it could see everything out of its camera eye’s. Would it be recording my movements, and patterns and in that case maybe that is not always the best thing and a bit creepy. Although this machine is just a prototype, I think it would be a great invention/catalyst. Inventors are working on robotic projects all the time that are created to help our every day needs, but the fear of a technological machine with its own mind does tend to be a constant conflict that I’ve noticed. Aside from a few of the questions that I had and thoughts, I find this catalyst resourceful for not only prao’s needs, but everyones as well and it will take a lot for this idea to one day to be not only created but accepted as well.

Int. Studio & Seminar 2: Bridge Project 3 – Catalysts “Style- Fast & Easy”

IMG_6250-2

Description: I created this catalyst to serve the sole purpose of hair. I am constantly trying to find a salon that can do my hair at a reasonable price and with a certain amount of time, but of course this is New York City and most blowout start at $35.00, and take hours to complete and majority of the time they still don’t achieve the style you wanted. This is where my catalyst comes in. I have created a machine that resembles an old fashion hair color dryer, although this time instead of just drying the hair the dome will have the function of styling your hair. The spherical object will have the technology skill of being able to practically anything. There were be 2 blow dryers, 2 scissors, a choice of 2 hair products, 1 flat iron, 1 curling iron, and 2 extra spaces if there is any other service you desire.

Idea 1: Cost; If you hate paying the competitor price of $35.00 or more, this invention is made for you. I realized that the cost of blow outs and other hair functions keep going up due to stylist increase cost, tax, etc. If we eliminate the stylist and replace them with a full function robotic stylist that can do exactly what you ask, at a less cost… why not give this invention a try. Although, with eliminating the stylist comes complications.

Idea 2: Stylist; The problem with my Catalyst invention, is that it would cause a lot of hair colorist and stylist to loose their jobs. Although this is not entirely true. The invention will be programed with the styles from top stylist, to demonstrate perfection. As well as in the salons there will be a few stylist to help fill the inventions with your choice of product and will program it to create the style and function you want. They will also be of assistance just in case there are any touchups that are needed, because lets be honest we still have a mind of our own and only human contact can truly fix that.

Idea 3: Products & Functions; Blow dryer. Flat Iron. Curling Iron. Keratin Treatment. Olaplaex treatment. Hair Dying (Any Color). Hair Cut. Any product use (based off of request). Hair style booklet. *Prices will vary based on hair length, product use, and function.*

Idea 4: Time; Time is of the essence. New York City, like many cities is always on a tight schedule. Depending on your day not everyone has the time to sit down for 30minutes or more for a hair cut or blow or dye or treatment. I know that sometimes when I ask a hair stylist how long will it take to complete my hair.. they usually lie, and I end up being late or behind schedule for what ever or where ever i have to go. With this invention they guarantee you the truth and a response to the amount of time it will take. Time will vary depending on the hair style, function and length of your hair. But the machine will guarantee you that it will for sure take less time to do your hair compared to your usual stylist.

Idea 5: History; Hair styles and functions have been around for decades. It is the life of some people, and if it wasn’t for a few inventions this idea catalyst would never have been thought up. In 1898 Lyda D. Newman, an african american female activist recreated the ‘hair brush’.  Her hairbrush design included several features for efficiency and hygiene. It had evenly spaced rows of bristles, with open slots to guide debris away from the hair into a recessed compartment, and a back that could be opened at the touch of a button for cleaning out the compartment. In the late 19th century Alexander F. “Beau” Godefroy, invented the official hair blow dryer in France at his salon.  The hair dryer is composed of a bonnet attached to a flexible chimney that extended to a gas stove. With out these inventions and many more, we would never have the technology or idea of this amazing catalyst. Our modern era, would never be as high-tech.

Types of zippers:

Reverse coil zippers, Invisible zippers, Coil zippers, Metal zippers, Plastic-molded zippers, Open-ended zippers, Two way open-ended zippers, Two way closed-ended zippers, Magnetic zippers

Zippers:

-Today: Depending on the brand and material, zippers tend to be less expensive to product consumers due to the job labor and vast amount there are. It is easier for product owners to have there workers make zippers on their products rather than hand sew the buttons and snap ons. It also provides more jobs for people, but there is a problem with that. Child labor. Some companies such as zara, gaP, h&M, Nike, etc. Basically any company that involves fast fashion.

Int. Studio 2: Visual Culture- Images of People In NYC

Take at least five pictures of people really LOOKING at something, and NOT just looking at their phones. Really, if your eyes are open, you’re kind of always looking at something. But I’m talking about looking hard, maybe like looking at something and trying to figure out what it is, or why it’s there. The example I gave you in class was with Tom Friedman’s public art piece, the one that makes viewers look up. If you can go check out that piece, then perfect, take pictures of people looking at it or up at it, or whatever!

People are always looking at their phones now. We all do it even when we don’t want to. So don’t take pictures of people doing that. Too easy!

In NYC there’s always something neat or crazy or disgusting or funny or curious that crowds of people are looking at, maybe talking about, maybe pointing at. Go for that kind of thing.

Int. Studio 2: 90 minutes

Int. Studio 2: 90 minutes. Within the post, make sure to caption or label each drawing as a 45 minute drawing, and list the materials you used.

-Make a LP post for your ’45 minute’ drawings. Take good pictures of the drawings you did of the object you chose at home last week, and of the one you exchanged with someone in class. Put those pictures in the post ALONG WITH some notes about which object was more challenging to draw in 45 minutes, and why.
