Phantogram’s Fall In Love

I am a person who gets pulled in by music. On the Processing Exhibitions website, the first exhibition/project that caught my attention was Phantogram’s “Fall In Love” video from their music album Voices. Not only is the music engrossing but also the visuals. Timothy Saccenti directed this video using projections and collaborated with Joshua Davis, who is a visual code artist.

The video was shot in true black and white, on the Red Monochrome and the result is mesmerizing. What drew me more towards this project was how synchronized the music was to the art work showcasing in the background and how each piece of work moved along with the beats and music. Along with the visual codes fitting perfectly in the video, I liked how the visuals made the video more three-dimensional.

In an interview with Promo News, Timothy Saccenti stated, “With code and video synths there’s some similarity. You set up parameters and the pieces generate themselves in a way.  It’s got a touch of alchemy to it.  When I had been commissioned to create the album artwork for the Phantogram debut “Voices” I felt their sound and visual direction would work well with a touch of this alchemy. We created the artwork around Josh’s code and I projected onto the band and graphic set pieces – the music video became and extension of this.”

Obviously, I listened to this song multiple times and while listening to it I got inspired and thought of making a painting. Therefore, as the music played along, I took my blank canvas and started by using an acrylic gel medium on it. I spread it all over the canvas and started making lines going in all different directions. Luckily, it dried fast and the next thing you know I have a brush and black acrylic paint in my hand and I just paint the canvas like there is no stopping me. The end result is a black and white canvas with some lines that give the painting a 3D effect and show how the video and the music moved me.
