Ralph Steadman caught my eye because I relate to and admire him as an artist. In my artwork, I sometimes try to touch up politics, especially recently and as I grew up. Ralph Steadman is known for his satirical political artwork and the ways he expresses his opinion through his art. You can see it in his line making especially. There is so much angst and expression in so many of his pieces. That is something I admire and try to have in my work. Although I love his voice in his artwork, my favorite aspect of him as an artist is how he shows humans. He portrays them as unintelligent and mean, often. There is always a dumb or ugly trait about his people, but yet, there is also something very empathetic about them. I find this in some of my work. Bizarre, yet lovable.
Here is a cartoon I made last year.
Here is a piece by Ralph Steadman.
Both Steadman and I used our work as a social critique. We both used alien-like creatures to help convey our message, which I believe sometimes is essential when critiquing people, because no one likes being critiqued so if there is enough space between them and the role they play in your work, the more they are willing to understand. This alien aspect also helps create humor, which both Steadman and I use.
