Introduction to Fashion Studies Learning Post #1

After I read about Chirstopher Breward’s aphorisms from his foreword to Fashion studies, I found out there are two aphorisms interested me.

Chirstopher Breward mentioned in his article, “Fashion is not necessarily spectacular (though it often conforms to the theory of the society of the spectacle), it can also be demotic, ordinary, mundane, routine and humble. It is the stuff of the ethnographer and the anthropologist.” For me, it means that fashion does not have to be consoicuous. It can also be very simple, elegant and has the touch with people’s daily life. Form my personal views, I totally agree with it. Just like haute couture and ready to wear, these two different categories in fashion industry, one is designing for especially custom, and another one is for the general market. Fashion can be spectacular like an exclusive custon-fitted dressing which Taylor Swift wore to the Met Gala, or a comfortable blue jean you wear to school.

The another aphorism that Chirstopher Breward wrriten in his article is “ Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived a futures foretold.” For me, it means that there is always a deep meaning behind fashion. From what a fashion designer’s design style is till what you usually like to wear, we are able to see the your own personailty or your own story behind those garment. For example, Alexsander Mcqueen’s design style carries a darkness side basic on his own life experence, and John Galliano’s design style carries the romantic and magnificent feeling of it. Above all I agree with it.
