The Gulf War of 1991 left a significant impact on the environmental status of Kuwait. After 800 oil wells were lit on fire, vast amounts of smoke and carbon dioxide began filling up the air, which was very harmful to the environment. Despite the impact this has left, current oil production in Kuwait is causing the air to be even more polluted. Moreover, recent research has shown that the pollution occurring from oil production is posing a serious risk of cancer developing within the Kuwaiti population. My goal for this design brief is to create a piece that raises awareness on the harmful damages that oil production is causing. I want to showcase this issue in a way that is both compelling and shocking to the audience, as I want them to feel the need to get more involved in this issue once they view the piece. The reason why I am going to be focusing on this is because Kuwaiti society does not realize the harmful impact we have on our environment and our health, and that we hold the power to stop it. People, in general, never really believe that this would personally affect them and that they might one day end up the victim. As a result of the unstable political state of Kuwait, there are no plans to find a solution for this issue. My project is targeted towards the Kuwaiti population, but mostly the youth, as they hold the power for change within the future.
