The Inhabitable Wall

The primary function of my wall is to partition the space into two, a bookstore and a cafe. However, my wall is built in a modular way that allows it to manipulate the space, in that it can contract into a 4 ft x 16 ft space, and expand throughout the entire space. The wall will be made from stained wood, and the colors used are inspired by a Mark Rothko painting. It is a ‘kit of parts’ that can transform and define the parameters of the space. The parts inside the wall include three different sized bookshelves, two panels for seating, and one panel for laying. Outside the wall, although it is technically a part of the wall, will be seven columns. These columns are multi purpose; they act as parameters for how far the panels can move, they are lighting installations, and finally they help define the flow of the space. The function of the different sized bookshelves are for storing different sized books. The panels with seating/laying options are meant for people to read a book in, eat in, etc., however the base of them also serve as storage for the adjustable shelves or anything else. When it is closed up, and looking in from the street, you can see two bookshelves, the sides of two other bookshelves, and the back of the laying panel. From this view, the wall literally covers everything behind it, giving the appearance of a much smaller space. When the wall is opened up, people are guided from the street to turn either left or right, but no matter which direction they choose, they will have the same view since the panels are placed symmetrically. The panels for seating/laying include a step for storage, but they could also act as extra seating. Although the panels have specific placements, people are free to interact with the wall and move the panels to create their own unimagined spaces. The most important quality of my wall is the fact that it is modular and movable because it is able to manipulate the space in which it is in.
