“BETWEEN THE FOLDS” DOCUMENTARY

Between the Folds was an eye opening documentary into the world of paper folding. It follows the lives of different artists and scientists who have left behind their industries to focus on paper folding. They all start with the same paper and fold either in simplicity or complexity. All these accomplished and successful people have devoted their lives to the act of folding a simple square paper. They are not adding from the paper, or taking away from it, they are simply changing the memory of the paper. It was extremely interesting to see how so many people are taking part in the same activity, and yet each one perceives it through their own lens. The anarchists, for example, like to be unconventional and rebellious towards their approach to paper folding whereas the engineer believes the paper needs to be mapped out in terms of dimensions, and where to fold. My favorite interviewee was the post modernist, and a quote I found particularly funny is when he says, “paper has a problem… it is very passive.” I agreed with the post modernist in that I found it extremely difficult to fold a paper (intricate patterns) and have it be successful in the first try, it is through the struggle in which the art of folding emerges.
