FIELD TRIP FOUR

AESOP UNIVERSTIY PLACE

PRIMARY MATERIALS

  1. Felt
  2. Plywood
  3. Concrete
  4. Terrazo

APPLICATION OF MATERIALS

  1. The concrete and terrazzo are both part of the flooring. Aesop’s flooring is terrazzo, in different varieties and with different concrete to stone ratios. There are both a lighter grey and black 2’ by 2’ tiles. The concrete flooring comes in as part of the ice cream store thats next door to them, since the space used to be part of it.
  2. The plywood is arranged in slabs to create the shelving to display the products. The plywood slabs are placed against a felt wall.

MATERIALITY

Felt is a sound absorbing material, so placing it as the material on the walls creates a very soft environment acoustically. The way that the plywood panels were placed along the wall allowed for openings to display the products but also hidden compartments to space a diffuser, giving the environment a very minty smell. The vintage sink is the heart of the space and is used for consultations.

BOBST LIBRARY

PRIMARY MATERIALS

  1. Aluminum
  2. Sandstone
  3. Marble

APPLICATION OF MATERIALS

  1. In the courtyard lobby, there is a bronzed aluminum veil along all levels of the library creating a long atrium. The laser cut aluminum has an anodized bronze finish and diffuses light and views from each level.
  2. The textured red sandstone is used for the exterior of the building. There are tiles with a variety of textures, some more square others more rounded, and some hammered.

MATERIALITY

The moment you enter the lobby the aluminum veil is overwhelming in its height and detail, and makes the library feel very big. The marble walls create a cooler environment although the juxtaposition between it and the flooring is very interesting.

FEIT WEST VILLAGE

PRIMARY MATERIALS

  1. Plywood
  2. Concrete
  3. Mirrors

APPLICATION OF MATERIALS

  1. The plywood is stacked snd separated to define the space and the surfaces where the products will be displayed. They also incorporate vertical lighting in between to guide and light up the space.
  2. The concrete is used as the flooring and is painted, which makes it seem very smooth. It is very subtle to all for the the rest of the materials to create a larger effect.

MATERIALITY

The moment you enter the space the raw materials are applied in a way that creates a very dramatic effect. The stacked plywood and the mirrors are very minimal yet they play with the space. The use of the mirrors are platonic, conceptually, in that create a sense of multiplication and extension of the space. There is a sense of subtle mimicry within the entire space.

AESOP BLEECKER ST

PRIMARY MATERIALS

  1. Plywood
  2. Leather
  3. Brass
  4. Animal Fiber (horse hair)

APPLICATION OF MATERIALS

  1. The flooring is made of leather, and is assembled in tiles. The color severely changed over time from naturally tan on the sides to a drastically darker center.
  2. Brass is used for the more decorative aspects of the space, the lamp and the sink (common theme in all shops)

MATERIALITY

The plywood is used for the walls, the shelving to display the products (hidden diffuser) and the ceiling. This creates a very sound dampening environment, along with the leather on the floor. The shop has very quiet acoustics and distinct smells, a theme similar across multiple locations, and therefore creates a very sensory experience. Coming in from the busy sidewalks, the shop almost feels like a sound studio with no exterior noise.
