For the Jet Plane Project, the class was asked to make something inspired by home and NYC. Its requirements are (1) the volume of the project must be greater than a carry-on suitcase, and (2) it must be able to be disassembled and fit all its elements easily inside the carry-on.
The project was definately very challenging since I was not used to working on a large scale. I learned so much about balancing, structure, support, materiality, and weight. My idea for this project is inspired by the city’s lack of privacy and its busyness. My home is in Long Island, NY, where there is a lot of open space and rarely people walking on the streets. Since I value alone-time, the city sometimes makes me want to crawl into a hole.
This is why for this project, I made a hole-like structure that I can crawl into, relax, and reflect on myself – without the distraction of people who are always in my space. Inside the structure, there are pockets to put my valuables inside and the word “calm” is embroidered.

I learned that I could mark the cardboard layers with notches so that I can adjust them to the desired height again.
