I want to create an album/collection of walks. Ideally, you are taken through a virtual, visually-simplified version of the walk. The accompanying audio recording will play throughout.

1 / Leafletmy demo, using unparsed data . seems like least challenging approach to online mapping, but limited 3D/visualizing abilities.

2 / Esri ArcGISnyc demo . requires ArcGIS Pro, which runs only on Windows!

3 / Cesiumnyc demo . tons of resources for both Cesium and open-sourced NYC data:

  • huge CityGML files of NYC buildings, roads and lots
    https://www.gis.bgu.tum.de/projekte/new-york-city-3d/
  • software for rendering 3D city models for web (3DCityDB-Web-Map-Client),
    comes with Manhattan KML example
    https://github.com/3dcitydb/3dcitydb-web-map, documentation [pdf]
  • nyc demo using 3D Tiles (‘Flyover Mode’ is very cool!),
frustrating because 3D Tile layer with buildings/data (in the demo) is no longer public. can’t find data anywhere else.

self as system ? system as self
‘puncturing a system through narrative’

My system: Manhattan, the city as a whole – cars, roads, buildings, people.

How has tracking, panopticism + surveillance within systems been explored as narrative?

  • avoid methods of tracking (iSee, IAA)
  • track yourself, publish it (Tracking Transience, Elahi)
  • track something else, publish it (Bank Job, Kerbel)
  • create distractions/disruptions

How to simplfy data?

  • Create an interpretation… ultimately a proposition.
  • Translating the system (Manhattan) into moments… artifacts
