final project

A walk to notice.

A walk as an abstraction.

For my final time project I had to code a website that created a narrative or experience of a space. Through digital media I had to change how one views a place. I created a website that explores the small pockets of nature in the city, along with destructive items that oppose nature. I wanted to use drawings as a way to visualize specific items in an area and poetry as a way to materialize relationships between bodies and one’s surroundings. The website itself lacks a direct narrative on purpose. It is an abstract exploration of what you see and run into on an everyday walk. The website helps you take time to pause and reflect in a busy city. You become more aware of the earth and pollution in the city.

final reflection

I enjoyed learning how to code and creating a website. I liked incorporating art and writing into a narrative and digital experience. I thought my project was successful because it is a way to experience nature through an artistic platform. If I were to continue to build this website, I would add more items to pay attention to on walks, such as more plants, weather, and animals. Perhaps I could make the website even more site specific by including native plants and animals in the given area. I found the coding to be a fun learning experience, and I will continue to explore ways to share information and art through websites.

project proposal

For this final project I want to take the viewer on a walk along 12th street, possibly elsewhere, but focusing on the natural aspects of this street. I want to present an idea of noticing, specifically seeing the earth and nature in a concrete environment. But what is opposing nature? This website will also draw attention to the trash on the street, in the gutter, and on the curb. So often when we walk to a place, our attention is only focused on the end destination. It is important to be conscious of the few parts of nature that surround us, to celebrate its resilience and beauty, to see what is harming it. I will ask the viewer to pay attention to these things through art.

I want the website to be abstract in a sense, nonlinear. I want it to be almost rudimentary in nature yet poetic.

The website will prompt the viewer with different items, such as grass, sidewalk crack, gutter, branch, cloud, flower etc. Upon encountering these items on the walk, the viewer will click the link and be brought to a page with a poem that explores the idea of the object and its relationship to the body, thought, or emotion. There will be an illustration or photograph to accompany each poem.

This moment, this page of art, will be a second for mindful reflection. The viewer will take the time to be conscious of the nature or pollution surrounding their living space and how it affects their body.
