Fashion Bodies

This is an advertisement from the most prestigious fashion brand- Chanel. The models used in this ad has a similar height and a similar body shape. They all have a relatively tall height and lanky body shape. The hourglass figure, with big breasts and busts aren’t shown. Four models have different ethnicity as it shows that Chanel has a very diverse market. They all look emotionless in the photo, that gives out an edgy feeling. This ad’s creator, in my opinion, does not focus on the model’s body shape but more on the garments. It creates a welcoming attitude as, if I don’t have a tall and skinny body shape like the models in the photo, I will still have the confidence of pulling off the outfits. The jackets and pants are slightly loose and over sized, and this shows that if the consumers  don’t have an ideal body, they can still feel safe and happy wearing the garments. The design of the garments are relatively conservative and elegant. All four models have really different facial appearance and skin tones,  it looks beautiful on all of them. Nothing looks odd in the photo and it is very comfortable to look at. I wouldn’t feel insecure or be in doubt if you can wear it or not. The combination of the three colors white, blue and beige gives out a very gentle and comfortable feeling as these three colors welcomes anyone to wear it. This ad is very successful in terms of giving out a healthy feeling between the creators and the consumers, no one feels awkward. “Different techniques of dress produce different bodies” (Entwistle,134) I totally agree with this. In the Chanel ad above, the model on the left wears a high waisted pants that made her legs look longer. The model on the right wears a low waisted jeans but a tube tio showing her waist, this made her body look longer. However, the two models might have the same body shape and body height but the foi us on the body was different and it made us think their body shape are different. Different techniques of dressing a model or a person can definitely give out a different kind of body shape even if it is the same person. Dressing is so important and because the two models focus of dressing are different, it balances out the picture , making the photoshoot more beautiful and harmonious.

Essay

School

I go to Parsons, a prestigious art school in the biggest city in the world, I automatically get immersed  by all the art and fancies around me. Dressing up whatever I want and however I feel is in no doubt. There are no limitations in parsons. I chose to wear something comfortable while edgy, oversized while sexy.

Major

My major is fashion design. This exposes me to learning different kinds of materials and constructions. This is photo I am wearing a 3m reflective outfit. I made this outfit for my sophomore finals and this fit I was totally influenced by my major. Busy yet subtle.

Culture.

Although I’m in newyork city. I will never forget my chinese culture. Chinese culture are known as being conservative and elegant. Although I can dress whatever I want in this city but my culture will still limit what I choose to wear. I cannot wear something too exposing and sexy. On top of that Chinese culture wears lives print. In this photo I am wearing a fitted sized blazer with scenery print on it.

Gender.

My pronoun is a she but I do not want to limit myself in what I wear. I love joker, as a male character, and I want to embrace how a women joker can be as powerful as a male joker. This is my Halloween costume.

Age.

I’m 19 years old and mini skirts are always my favorite thing. If I’m not wearing mini skirts now then when?

Christopher’s Breward aphorisms

“Fashion is not necessarily spectacular (though it often conforms to the theory of the society of the spectacle), it can also be demotic, ordinary, mundane, routine and humble. It is the stuff of the ethnographer and the anthropologist.”

This aphorism states that fashion doesn’t always have to be great, even though it represents the society at a given time period. There are so many sides to fashion, it could be used as sleep wear, uniform, functional costumes, lingeries. The styles of fashion could be bland or boring. The designs or styles are created depends on the designer. I generally agree on this aphorism. We often think that fashion or being fashionable should be something trendy, stylish or even luxurious but fashion could just be a plain tee and skinny denim jeans. Fashion can have infinite definitions, and every definitions is defined by the consumer or the creator. Some may use fashion as their aesthetic, some may use fashion to convey a message to the world, and some may use fashion to uniform people’s appearance. Fashion doesn’t always have to be    Spectacular in the sense that it doesn’t have to be conform in one general population.

I chose this aphorism because people tend to ask me whether or not I’m going to design fancy clothes for celebrities or host runway shows but that’s not necessarily how I view fashion or the goal of studying fashion. A lot of successful brands might not have enormous runway shows , or sponsorships from celebrities, their clothes can me repetitive or ordinary, but they can still be successful and practical.

“Fashion is gossip. Never underestimate the power of gossip. Semiológicos are driven into ecstasies of supposition by its whispers.”

Fashion trend is like a drug, it spreads very quickly like a viral gossip. People keep falling into trends , into constant cycle of trends. For example, when a Supreme new product launches, people would stay up until midnight to bid for the latest sneaker or tee shirt. A simple trend can make people throw their whole monthly earning into it, making people feel a different kind of high. The trend is like an addiction, we will always want more things and get new things but we don’t necessarily need it.

I do agree that this aphorism do take place in our everyday lives but I do not believe this is how it should be. I believe you or me as an individual should create our own fashion. Wear what we truly want or wear what we truly feel comfortable in. People should not confine to trends just because its a trend. They shouldn’t feel pressured to buy the “new supreme hoodie” or “expensive Gucci shoes” in order to fit in in this fashion community.

I chose to discuss this aphorism because I was a victim in following the trends and I would always want the newest launch in order to show off or fit in. I can feel myself falling deeper and deeper into this everlasting cycle like how gossip will just keep spreading. The power of fashion is huge.

Haptic Space: Wire Hand

Written Reflection:

3. I chose my glasses for my object to sculpt my hand. My glasses or shades are one of the things I wear every single day, no matter what kind of day it is. I just think that putting on some simple or fancy pair of glasses can make my normal outfit more interesting.   By putting my favorite pair of glasses on this wire hand shows the beauty of both objects. The little bent of the hand lifting the lightweight glasses gives out a gentle and delicate feeling of the sculpture.

4. It was really hard at first because I bought the wrong wires. I thought I could still make it but it got me so frustrated to the part that I couldn’t continue it. After searching for the right wire through different Blick store in the city, I finally found the perfect one. When I start using the right wire everything afterward went very smooth. I sketched and planned out the whole design I want on paper and started working on the hand without a single hesitant. Patience is the only thing I learned in this project. If you don’t have patience, everything like the portion of the hand and the balance of it will go wrong.

5. I really enjoyed the process of making the wire hand since I’ve never worked with wires before, and considering my first time working with wires and pliers, I absolutely loved the result of my wire hand. For improvement, I wish I can work on the details of the hand a little bit better, like sculpting the knuckles or veins a bit more obvious.

10 ‘selfies’ of my hand

1. Every single day, I observe myself in the bathroom the most. Before taking a shower, I would always weight myself, look in the mirror and see if i have any weird rashes or bumps on my face and body and feel my arms and legs if my hair grew from the last shave.

2. I often observe or found something new on my body every time I look in the bathroom mirror but it feels like a habit already since I do it every single day.
