The Assignment
Based on the key topics from the course with “specific focus on an issue or issues that you personally feel a strong connection to,” create a final creative work that solves, comments, or responds to it.
Proposal
For this assignment, I decided to to make a response towards the things I’ve observed occurring during my internship at a commercial fashion design group. After weeks of working with various design teams, I’ve noticed that there is an excessive amount of fabrics/sample clothes that were accumulated and tossed away to their “donation” bins, which are often filled with scrapped/clipped clothes that are rendered unusable. The lack of textile recycling/upcycling care prompted me to salvage and document all the fabrics and clothes that were thrown away. The amount of work that sample makers (oftentimes from India or China) are scrapped and the clothes without ever utilized as a proper garment. With the fabrics and clothes I’ve saved, I will be creating a sculpture/installation piece, titled “consumers eagerly consuming,” in response to the accumulation of wasted textiles.
