Soft Structures: “CIRCUS”

Assignment

Explore the relation between 3D and 2D by creating unique structures that incorporate techniques of clothing construction, surface treatment, and experimentation. Develop transforming 2D surfaces into 3D objects. A variety of techniques, such as machine sewing, knitting, patternmaking, and draping will be incorporated into the design process.

Create a composition of items that you have laying around and reinterpret them into soft structures using knowledge of design elements and principles. Choose 5 objects from the original composition and sketch out three different iterations. List out details of each item and separate them into main objects and supporting objects. Then, edit down the original composition and shapes to create a cluster of 4-6 items.Utilize practice-based research to understand construction methodologies that can later be translated into these objects.

Reconceptualized soft structures

My project was inspired by Robert Rauschenberg’s “Red Paintings” and Bjork’s song “Venus as a Boy.” Rauschenberg’s series of experimental paintings is like an experience of color and I played off of that for the color story of my compositionWhen I think about color, red is the loudest and most passionate of them all, hence my decision to use monochromatic variations of red and orange with accents of navy and black. Another aspect of this project I really wanted to explore is the use of different kinds of fabric textures or the process of textile-making that might translate to a collage of juxtaposing weird and interesting patterns and shapes. I envision my renderings of each compositional item to be abstract creatures that are personified in one way or another from that will later relate back to its original image. I’d also like to make each rendering malleable so that each piece is not restricted to one particular shape.

Spot on this write-up. I really feel this weblog needs far more attention.
