Fashion Studies LP Post #2: Advertisement

In Susan Kaiser once wrote, “Advertising dehumanizes and demeans women – turning them into sexualized objects and proffering unattainable images of beauty (Kaiser 2012, 218), and I found that quote to be quite true. One example that fits this statement was the ad campaign for fashion accessories brand Adore in which white, basically identical models were placed on a white pedestal. Their lifeless expressions and perfect blonde hair further portray these women as what the brand considers the “image of beauty.” Two models are pictured with virtually no clothing on other than a pair of knee-high stockings and heels. That further stereotypes them as these unattainable objects of beauty while reinforcing the heteronormative appeal of thin, white women to theĀ general masses.
